Project daily driver 85 4runner

no I tow it with the FJ. I guess technically it could tow the camper provided I had a way to get the hitch all the way down to the camper. I had a freind who used to tow a 16 foot fiborglass boat with an 89 SR 5 extra cab 22RE. It did the job but it wasn't a happy camper 😂

Damion, I think the driver side screen came "missing" from the factory. Same as mine. I was also gonna cover it.with a gutter screen, but too lazy, I just put the gutter screen under the outer cowl grille.

I can't speak to the 85, but both my 87's have screens on both sides from the factory. I've never had the piece that goes over them off, so I KNOW they're both factory.
I don't know if that's any help or not...

Ahh ok, I didn't see the FJ in the pics, makes sense. I wouldn't want to tow anything with my 4Runner.
My 1988 DLX did not come with any cowl vent screens I don't think, however I did manage to find an SR5 4Runner at the u pull it junkyard here once, and I grabbed both screens.

yup, I used to use my 90 2wd pickup with a 22R to tow a 14 aluminum bow rider. It was good enough for the job but anything more would have been no fun. Then we would add a bunch of camping equipment and it was a job for that little truck.
a few more from the weekend.
I originally got the idea on them blower vents from another build thread on here where they actually eliminated the vents on the cowl grill. Like I said I may end up regretting the idea but I could modify it later on. This was one of the most effected areas with rust because so much stuff collected in the inner cowl. Kinda like the metal trim around the windshield.

My 87 4Runner, with a 22RE, was pretty good at towing.
Not sure the weight of the trailer I borrowed from a friend. We would pile it full and more with everything you can imagine we needed to take our bunnies to shows. Bunnies, cages, cedar shavings, food, water, grooming tables, you name it. doesn't sound like much, but it adds up fst. We'd pile the truck full of the camping gear for us to use, and would travel from Yuma to Phoenix, Cardiff by the Sea, California, you name it. I never had any trouble whatsoever, not even going up the mountains on I-8.
The tow bar was one I welded onto the frame. Had a nice drop hitch, too. I added the electrical connector myself, as well. I did NOT use those vampire splices. Blech! It towed the bunnies all over the place, no trouble. The visibility of the 4Runner was especially nice when backing up.
It may not be good enough for the travel trailers, but for the bunnies, it works great! By the same token, not many trailer bunnies to shows, either...
Have fun, all!

I love that Shasta. I used to pull a 19.5' Searay with my '88 4Runner. My friend towed a 16' Stingray with a 2WD Toyota truck. I know I checked the owners manual about tow limits. There was no internet to tell me otherwise. Of course there is no photographic proof.

Careful, there! You're blocking a part of the 4Runner. Sacrelige!

Have fun with it. I have to avoid DQ like the plague, now. That bloody Girl Scout Thin Mint thing would kill Me. Sugar overload. Diabetes doth sucketh!
Maybe if I only had one or two of them...? Or four, or, you know, a nice even 5?
Sigh...

The 4runner had a very light week last week. We spent most of the week up in Vermont with the FJ doing towing duty for the camper again but this was from our way back home on Sunday from Terriville CT, we volunteer for one of the biggest VW shows in CT and actually left Herbie home for this one.
funny thing though we saw quite a hand full of older Toyotas up there too. We passed a nice first gen 4runner at a house on rt 9 a couple times. Always forgot to get a photo though.
this photo is for you Ray with all the beautiful scenery photos you get!
there's a huge deer was running through this one but too far for my cheap phone to really see.

I remember when I could go out and get ice cream!
There was a Coldstone Creamery in my home town, or close, anyway. My friends, especially of the female variety, and I used to go in there on warm afternoons. Good times, great ice cream.
Now, I'm diabetic and am not permitted by my lovely wife to have ice cream. <sigh> I miss chocolate chip something fierce at times...
Keep having good times in your truck

the traditional through the windshield photo at Hogback Mountain VT.
we even managed to find another old Yota on our 200 mile round trip to and from Woodford State Park in Vermont. I planned our route to include some dirt roads on our journey. That was a good time for my phone to lose signal and not offer anything for directions for a bit. Of course we didn't have any maps in the truck anymore. We've been out there before so it worked out nicely.
