Problems with Truck

Hello.
I have a 1985 sr5 4x4. It is running rough. It idles above 1000rpm and sometimes rev past 1500 and back down to 500 repeatedly when at a stop. Also since it is getting colder here the truck is getting hard to start in the morning.

I am new to the 22re but I am mechanically inclined. Was wondering what you experts think the problem/s is/are and what I should check.

Thanks
Leon

Does the idle fluxuiate a lot at a stop? If so check the Idle air control valve. With it hard to start i guess it could be the cold start valve. I am sure some other people will chime in.

Simple fix is to tourn your idle speed down:

Idle air screw sits atop the throttle body. Also make sure your timing is set to 5*BTDC with the timing jumper installed:

If the timing is advanced too far, you'll not be able to get the idle speed down to the proper range (approx. 750-800 RPM). If all that is OK, check for vacuum leaks.

A friend's 1989 22RE would do that... headgasket was bad.

Another friend's crappy little Civic hatch did that... again the headgasket.

Do a tuneup first. IF it still does the above, do compression tests and look for strange fluid colors.

Also check your airflow meter. I understand that this has to do a lot with mixture adjustment. It utilizes a large coil spring that may be getting "hung up". I would take the unit apart and inspect it for corrosion and such.

Thats funny, mines doing the same thing. It hasn't done it a lot...yet... I know my radiator is effed x20 and it needs a tune up. I think I may have run it too much without enough coolant in it and I burnt the head gasket. Im praying a new rad, tune-up, oil change and a few other things will make it run okay, but I wouldnt doubt if I screwed something major up
Check the IAC as other people have said.
As for the cold starts, thats normal when the temperature gets colder. I'm sure you know that. Check the cold start injector to make sure its working correctly. Or, if you're too worried about it not starting in really cold weather, get an oil pan and/or block heater, and/or a battery blanket/heater pad so you can plug it in before you start it in the mornings.

thanks guys!!! i did this last night and it worked. Got it set to +5 on timing and set the Idle Air Screw so that the truck idles at about 800 (its actually 900 right now but I am going to turn it alittle more today).

It seems to be running alot smoother.

I will try and post pics up for eveyone else experiencing this problem.

Anyone have instructions and pictures for checking and fixing the cold start injector???

A Factory Service Manual has a several page section on the cold start injector and timer switch.

4Crawler is the bomb!

I'll just add that when you adjust your idle, you need to check your timing as well. This is true on on 22r and 22re's.

Its true on many engines. Any change in timing WILL affect idle. The trick is always to go back and forth. Set the idle and check the timing. If you advance the timing, the idle raises (retarding the timing slows the idle). If you adjust the timing and your idle changes, change the idle. If you change the idle significantly, the timing is probably off now.

Unless you're dealing with a high performance motor (which in this case you're not haha) its found to be acceptable to be off a degree.. maybe two. Its not really a big process, but I think a lot of people make the mistake of relying on their 20+ year old SR5 tach and not taking in the fact that "the book" says 8deg BTDC @750 RPM for a reason. (Note: I believe this is the timing for a 1984 22R California truck).
