New '84 4 Runner... steering?
#1
Next question... steering. The best way I can explain it is that it doesn't track straight. The steering wheel doesn't have a lot of play. Not loose but it wanders, alot. Especially when on the brakes. And I think it's pretty significant. Anyone have any suggestions?
TIA!!! Cari

Tires are brand new just put on 2 days ago. If it was brakes wouldn't that "pull" to one side? It more wanders. Not sure if this is an accurate way to measure, but we measured the distance between the front tires on the front and back, with a tape measure, and the toe in is about 1/4".

well my toe in is 1/8" shorter then the rear and i drive perfectly straight. Believe me even 1/8" off can make you wander around the road. Just make sure your front is 1/8" shorter then your rear and your alignment should be good and drive and see how it is

We took the trac bar off and the sway bar but it was wandering before we did that. It wanders both when just driving and also when hitting a bump, but equally. I'll check the bump steer, steering joints, and spring bushings either today or tomorrow. And I'll go ahead and get it aligned. I'm still working on getting it smogged too.

Check you wheel bearings while you are at. Sounds like you truck needs the usual rebuild the front end and the general going through... Congrats on your Runner, from your avatar it doesn't look too bad...
