New 1st Gen Runner guy..... couple problems/questions

Hey guys, first post here. Just picked up an 85 4Runner a couple of weeks ago. 22RE/Auto/SA truck. Got a steal on it, or maybe not, lol. I'm having some issues with it. Here's some back story.

Bought it off a guy for a grand, he said it ran a year ago when he got it, but it'd been sitting a year or two prior to that and he couldn't get it running good enough to use it.

Brought it home, tossed in a new battery, new plugs and cleaned up the AFM and it fired right up. Idled like , but it ran, lol. Siphoned all the old gas out, changed the fuel filter, added some Seafoam and 13 gallons of 92oct and it's running decent now. Still has some stumble to it, but I'm guessing a tank or two of good gas should fix that right up.

Anyway, on to the issues. I have three idiot lights that will not go out: A/T Oil Temp, Charge and Parking brake. The system is charging, the parking brake isn't on, and I've had the trans up to temp, so I dunno what that issue is. Looked thru the service PDF, didn't find anything that causes those three things, so I'm looking for some input on those problems.

Also, the transmission. Yeesh. Holds park, Reverse works fine, and it will shift thru the gears decently. It will not hold in Low gear, meaning I can pull the shifter all the way back and it runs the gears like it's in Drive. No engine braking in second, slow downshifts, no kickdowns. I guess my question is am I looking at a linkage problem or is this thing toast? The fluid looks fine. Smells good too. It was about a quart low, but topping it off didn't fix any problems. The O/D button doesn't work either, lol. Or maybe the light on the dash is out, not sure, lol.

Anyway, if anyone has any input on my minor little issues here, I'd really appreciate it. I'm not a Yota guy, but I'd like to be, and I've already been doing a lot of reading and searching here. Thanks for the time and any help is greatly appreciated!

Rob

With the charge and brake light on, that is usually a sign of a bad alternator, get this problem fixed first and then look at the transmission. replacing the alt might fix everything if its not putting out the corect voltage. I don`t know much about automatic transmissions, we just did a manual trans swap on my 86 4Runner. How many miles on the engine ?, you might want to have the timming chain replaced if it the original one.

the break light might be because your break fluid is low, fill it up all the way to the full line, thats what happens to mine

good luck!
and welcome to yotatech

Yeah, it was putting out voltage, but I'm starting to think the same thing. It cranked over pretty weak earlier, and stumbled a bit more than usual. Thinking perhaps part of my stumble problem goes along with low voltage.

And the trans has apparently decided to fix it's self today, lol. I do need to adjust the linkage, but other than that it worked famously after some driving today.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll check out that alternator and see what's goin on there.

Oh, and it's got 232k on it. I was thinking about doing a full overhaul on it this summer. I have a friend that loves rebuilding 22R's, so I have a feeling for the parts and a case of beer he'll do it for me, lol.

Welcome to Yotatech.

Alternator is bad.

Brake fluid is low or e-brake is not fully released.

Next question.

MC is full of fluid. It was actually so full that it spilled over when I took the cap off. And the brake is fully released. Wonder if it's the switch.....

A 23 year old truck for a K, what do you expect?

Invest in a FSM if you are going to keep it and fix it up.

Certainly not greatness, lol. If I can't get it to go out the right way, I'll get it turned off the easy way..... black tape over the light so I can't see it, or just pull the bulb. Done that a time or two, lol.

I have the FSM .pdf off of here. PITA to nav thru, but it's working so far. Saved me buying a new AFM or TPS when I couldn't get it to run, lol.

Thanks again for the helping hands guys. I'll get some pics posted up and such. Pretty nice getting help right off the bat. Can't say I've had the same thing happen on a few of the other forums I'm on.

You pretty much have the same problems with mine. Our trucks are very similar too, except mine has 150K with all these issues. But since I'm not an A/T fan, now I'm doing the W56 swap. My trans has some slippage in it too but shifts fine manually. Sorry for not being able to help answer your Q's but at least you know that you're not alone and the issues are quite common.

I'll post up my trans/tcase for sale right after I finish doing the swap.

Well......

Finally got it to idle correctly. Temp sender was the issue there. Charging system ended up being a blown fuseable link. Wish I had checked that before I pulled the alternator, but I guess at least I have a new Alternator, lol.

Trans has gone back to acting funny, and it still bogs hard under load. Can't feed it any throttle at all without it falling over on it's face. It has to be either the TPS, Fuel Pump or the MAM. That's pretty much the only thing holding me back right now from having a fully drivable rig.

Try replacing the fuel filter, if its plugged your truck will run like crap.
