Question my 85 pickup has body damage on the cab

my truck was layed on its side and has body damage on the top and side of the cab. i have another 85 cab and i was wondering if anyone can tell me how hard of a job it would be to switch the better cab onto my truck. if anyone has done this before please give me some tips and pointers and things to look out for.

also the damaged cab is an sr5 and it was paired with a 22re. the good cab is not sr5 and was paired with a 22r. will there be any problems in interchanging if they had the different engines?

please let me know. thanks

Its shouldn`t be that hard, you will need to pull the motor, unless you have a way to raise the new and old cabs high enough to clear everything, you will need to swap the wiring from your old cab to the new cab because the 22R wiring won`t work with the 22RE and your SR5 gauge cluster. it will be a time consuming job so take your time and everything should come together.

how bad is the body damage you could cut the upper half af the cab off and have a good body guy graft a new cab section on for you.... tanto on the board flopped his taco and that's what he had done

well the noticable damage on the roof and side isnt that bad. they are good sized dents but could be popped out and bondo'd, but the door wont close all the way becase the door hinges that are attached to the body have been pushed back about 1/2 an inch. and the front passenger side fender well has been pushed down about 1/2 inch as well so it is hard to put a fender on it. i dont know if a graft will work because of this, but im not sure. what do you think?

i've seen cab swaps that are a pain!!!!! mainly because of the wiring... before you start that take it to a good body man and get his opinion

well the good cab i have is on a good 85 frame. do you think it would be easier for me to just switch my engine, tranny, trans case, axles and all other needed parts to the frame with the good body, or not?

With the body damage, can it be driven? Such as wifesaysimadumbass said - can you drive it down to a body shop and just act like 'what can I do about this?' and see what is said.

Depending on the frame of the donor and truck it may be easier to just swap the drivetrain. It sure would be for me.

no i cant drive it. so you think swapping the drive train and engine and all that would be easier? i havent ever really done anything like that so i dont know what to expect in terms of getting everything back together once ive taken it all off.

I swapped the Cab on my 85 and it was kind of a pain but now I know how everything goes together in my cab... Make sure to take pictures and label everything. You can disconnect everything under the hood and take your steering column apart and then if you have something that can lift really high like a giant front end loader if you have one you can pull the cab right off.
