I have not done one, but I do know that on a 4Runner you don't want to go over 2".
Roger Brown (4Crawler) makes the best bod mod lift kits out there.

I believe the 1" you don't have to modify anything.
When you bet up to 2", you have to extend your shifter handles, relocate the radiator bracketry, and other stuff.

Also if you have a bumper like mine, it won't work without moddin' it if you go with a 2" kit.

There are a few folk's on here who have installed his kits.

I know i don't have a 2nd gen, but on a 3rd gen, you dont have to make any mods after the 1" body lift? Can you still use a custom front and rear bumper without it looking silly? Thanks

Body Lift

Hi guys,

I've recently purchased the 1" body lift kit from Roger Brown in order to help accommodate 33" tires. I haven't yet installed it but I will soon. I hear it's pretty easy with the use of some Liquid Wrench and a Hi-Lift Jack. I just have to get some longer bolts now.

I didn't want to go any bigger because of what Cory was saying. Way too much hassle with extending linkages, wires etc... Plus the 1" body lift and the Downey 3" (total) should do the trick. I may have to massage my fender seems a bit too.

Cory; do you know that the ARB will fit ok with the 1" lift? Are any mods necessary to the bumper at all?

Thanks,

Warren

Warren, you will have to ask Roger about that.
I'm not sure.

lifts

Corey, just wondering what you meant by this statement..

"Also if you have a bumper like mine, it won't work without moddin' it if you go with a 2" kit."

Yeah. I'm not too into body lifts either. Most of my lift will come from the Downey stuff. I figure a 1" body lift is pretty modest and it supposedly helps with sliderz installation and clearance as well as the tire clearance!?

Thanks,

Warren

I'll check with Roger Brown on that one too.

The ARB is mounted to holes in the frame, and not the body.
When you lift the body up off of the frame such as a bod mod lift, there will be a big gaposis when looking at the bumper.

It will sit lower and leave frame exposed.
Roger should ahve all the details on that.
I believe any bumper has to be redrilled to fit right afterwards.

Have you ever read the suspension round-up from ODW?
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/4Runne...sion/index.htm

A few are running 33" tires without doing any body lift at all on their 2nd gens.

interesting

Thanks Corey,

Yeah. I thought I had checked out that web page thoroughly. Most of the guys seem to have needed more lift than just the cranked torsions and some new rear springs but the last guy (Josh Perkins) didn't.

Maybe I'll keep the body lift and install it after. Don't wanna drill any new bumper if I don't have to.

Thanks again,

Warren.

Also, why haven't you gone with 33s?

Rowan, you couldn't be anymore right. But each has there place, if someone has a suspension lift, but is still rubbing alot, then a body lift is good for that if they cant lift the susp anymore. ---This was Adams case when he had his 96. But it is up to the owner, but yes, i feel a suspension lift should be picked over a body lift if the truck has not been lifter yet.

If I go with 33's, it's going to cost me close to $3,000.

1. Around $600 to $700 for new tires.
2. New gears front and back which is around $1500 or so installed.
3. Since the rear diff gets opened for new gears, might as well do a locker too.
Toy E locker over $600.

The Runner runs fine on the 31's, though it's geared for 235 size tires, which are probably about 29s.

If I go even to a 32", I'm going to lose power.
I'd love to run 33's, but I'm not willing to sink that much $$$ into the rig now.

If I do a Toy E locker mod in the future, I'll probably get it with the same gears I have in front.
For the terrain I run, 31" tires are fine on this rig.

My Toy project in the future however will be running 35s. That's a long, long ways off though.

Regarding 33's and the ARB with bodylift

I have 33's on my 95 with a 1" bodylift, tweaked t-bars, a bashed fender seam and a slightly trimmed liner. Backspacing is key, and a 1" bodylift is pretty minor.

Yes, I have a gap between the ARB and the truck, but it is not a big deal. If my roomate ever gets his act together, I will have some more pics of my runner on line shortly.

Happy trails,
Adrian

I think if you contact "VABeachJade" on the ODW forums he can hook ya up. He recently quoted me on a 3" body lift for my 98.

I put on a Roger Brown (4Crawler Offroad) body lift on. He made it custom for me at 1.5 inches. Any higher and i'd have to legnthen the steering shaft and trim the floor around the shift levers. I should be able to fit 33"s with only a tiny bit of fender bashing (coming soon) . Then I had the custom tube bumper made to fit with the lift so there's no gap.
