low power?

I purchased an 85 yota 4x4 extra cab 5spd manual 22r. I test drove it and looked it over. It seemed to work well and everything when I test drove it. I am driving it home on the freeway at 65mph or so and when I hit a decent hill it doesn't have enough power to keep it at 60 it will drop below 45mph to about 40 and then I have to downshift to 4th to keep it going between 40-45mph.

Any ideas on where to start w? I put seafoam in it to help clean the engine, I put a new air filter in it also from napa. If it's gonna be somethin serious (prob it) then I'm callin these people and telling them what's up and that I was mislead w/the purchase. Please help asap as I don't have much time. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, they are 31's... I have a couple pics of some questionable things. I am not sure what they are, I was hoping it could be part of my problem maybe. Also I don't have a tach, it is dead.

There are some hoses/connections that appear to be missing: Any ideas on these, if you can't see them let me know and I will try and direct you in the pictures as best as possible.

Sorry about the quality, all i had was a flash light and my phone

One other thing, the truck seemed to get pretty warm (temp gauge) when I was going 60. At 50mph the temp was pretty happy.

Well It really depends.
You say they are 31s.
I have 31's and 4.10 gear ratio.
Its not too bad of a dog, I can get up most hills with a good run before said hill and when i start feeling it bog at about 60-65 i down shift.
You could always check your gear ratio, its on the sticker on drivers side door jam.

What are said "questionable things"

EDIT ! : Im not much of a carb guy, But does it idle ok..?

i have the exact same truck..except mines an '86..and i have 31" super swampers..and i cant hold any more than about 45 up hill...and thats in 4th..or maybe 3rd..cant remember..lol..pretty sure its 4th though...and thats getting a run at it...of course this is a VERY steep hill on a state highway..on the interstate i usually can hold 55 or 60 in 4th..i hardly ever use 5th gear with the 31's...of course my cam was all kinds of F#$%#$ up...which probably made the valves start floating at about 2500rpms..so low power...but odviously something is wrong with yours..

i would suggest throwing a set of 235/75's on it..or stock size 225/75's..see what happens then...

First of all thank you all for the quick responses and input. I do not have another set of tires for this thing.

Is there something I can do to tell if it was something on the internals of the engine? Something that would get pricey.

It seems to idle fine. It cranks a couple times before it starts but that is it. Starts right up. Any ideas on where to start for a trouble shoot?

The third picture, it seems there is a place where a hose would fit over at the bottom of the black box. Maybe not, just seemed like it. I don't know what that thing is honestly.

One more question, what kind of price would i be looking at for a 22re engine ready for a swap?

My temp when I was at 50 or so is straight across (horizontal needle) When I was at 65 or so it went to a quarter inch below the red indicator on the gauge. That's when I noticed it and decided to slow down. It is pob 35-40 degree F here also so there is something wrong w/the temp too.

I live in Spokane, WA

I am going to be using some of that car cleaner stuff tomorrow morning. It seems that it drives fine on flat. It didn't seem like it lacked power on flat just when it needed that extra to go up the hill is when it bogged.

How about your voltage when you are running?

i'd start checking your cooling system..thats getting DANGEROUSLY HOT!...check your fluid..run a compression test to make sure it aint a headgasket...check your thermostat..and make sure your temp gauge is working RIGHT..i've seen them go haywire..

I have someone here that could rebuild the engine. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to do that.

I will take a look at the cooling system - the fluid looked good. It was at the full mark in the reservoir.

I do want to do a compression test, I do not have the stuff here to do that though. Is it something I can get at napa. I want to try and accomplish this tomorrow. I have never done a comp. test before.

Also I was thinking of checkin the plugs and just replacing them at the same time. I don't think that is it though.

The temp gauge appears to work correctly, there are no sudden jumps and it gets cooler as i get down to 50 and stays constant. It starts at zero and gradually warms up on a cold start. Appears to work properly.

My number one concern though is the weak power problem, so I want to focus on that. The cooling can be fixed later. I do have another car to drive for the time being.

Thank you again so much for help you guys are all providing and in such a quick manner.

You might consider replacing the timming chain if the engine has alot of miles on it, that could contribute to your loss of power.

Can I get what I need for a compression check at napa? Is there a guide for a quick 101 on this so I can get it done today.

I used search and am mainly just coming up w/people saying you need a comp. check, but no links. Thanks

I found this link.

Just to clarify though. I remove the spark plugs and when it says full open throttle do I just press the gas pedal all the way down and then crank for a few times and see what the compression is?

Is that correct?
