how do you pull codes

my truck is a 85 extended cab 2 wheel drive automatic trans body , computer ,and wireing harness
the chassis, motor, and running gears is a 90 ish 4x4 5 speed 4 runner 22re

i know my way around later domestic fuel ingection but not as familar with this set up
heres my questions

1. my check engine lite is on, can i pull codes with out a scan tool,if so how,are they flash codes,if so how many flashes equal what

2. all the wires that go to the old auto trans are disconected i would say that this by its self should trun on the cke lite but will it cause the fuel system to go in default(runs rich)

i drove it a while with no o2 sensor then got one hooked up and it seemed to lean out a bit

thank in advance

simply jumping the check connector with a bit of wire will let you read codes. No need to spend any bucks at all. In a pinch, a paperclip will do the trick.

Did you use the wiring harness from the 90? oR from the 85? They have two completely different connectors for pulling codes.
