My friend has a 1985 22RE and when he gets the rig up to speed, he hears a high pitch noise. When he takes his foot off of the gass, it goes away. As soon as he steps on the gass , the noise comes back. Please any help.

The rig is a AUTO, Not a STANDARD.

ANYONE? He dosen't want to drive the rig at this point. He is on his way over to let me here the noise. He want to take it to a shop, but if you guys can help, he can maby avoid this.

 

can you pinpoint a general area it seems to come from front, rear, inside or out

 

is it coming from the rear or the tranny?

 

Hard to tell, as I said, it is just a high pitch noise, but only when he steps on the gass. His foot off the gass, no noise.

 

I had a pully make a tea kettle/ super high pitched squeal once noise once, or corse, although I heard the regular pully sound before the tea kettle style whine.

I think we need a little more info although... anything really would help. Do you hear it when you give it gas while it is not moving?

*also, this is the pre-84 section, I bet the people in the right forum will know more about fuel injection and auto trans.

OK, I will get more info when I see him. I do have a ?, would a noise like this come from low Dif Grease. Just a ?.

 

as far as the low dif gease, think you mean lube. doesnt make a high pitched noise, more of a gear grinding/metal on metal rub. take a hand full or metal shavings/BB's, put in blender and thats a low dif lube sound lol.

 

Differentials contain gear oil... not grease, and to me, what you're describing sounds like worn drive side of the gears in the rear differential (which would explain why it goes away when you're coasting). Sometimes, gear faces can wear a bit funny if the pinion bearing preload goes down to zero. Check for any up-down and side-side play at the rear diff pinion flange (where the rear driveshaft connects to the rear differential). Any play there signifies that there is essentially no preload on the bearings, and that leads to erratic contact between your pinion and ring gear.

Also, to confirm that it's not engine related, like red1983 mentioned, rev the truck while in park to confirm that the noise is not there. If that checks out, check the pinion flange as explained above. If it's loose, it might be too late to salvage those gears (doesn't mean they won't still last a very long time if you correct the loose pinion flange, and tighten up the carrier bearing pre-load... just that they may always make noise from now on).

 

It sounds like a bad pinion bearing by the way you discribe it, atleast thats my guess.

 

i had that problem with mine and it was comming from inside the cab.. what was happening was that the cab was so air tight that when i would speed up or turn the heater on the air had to escape wich lead to the back window not being properly sealed in.

 

i would say you have excessive slop in the rear diff which is making the teeth on the gears sing. i have that on mine even after it has been redone. at about 55 and up it sings

 

I have recently developed a similar sounding noise in my truck. It sounds like it's coming from the tranny or the drivetrain. Between 2600rpm and 2900rpm, no matter what gear I'm in (manual), it makes this high pitched whine sound. It's not terribly loud, but when I ease off the gas it goes away. I haven't diagnosed it yet.
