Gears & Non 4x4

Does anyone know the best place to buy a set of gears for my 85 pickup? It is a 2WD running 31's.... I know the truck is capable of a lot more power, but I love the look with the lift & tires. I am located in SoCal if that helps....

TIA

As long as it's a 7.5" rear end you should be able to run gears for a 4WD IFS front. Might even be able to run the whole third member out of one, that'd give you 4.10's or 4.88's depending on what truck it came from.

-trike-Thanks for the response.

Another question.... the fact that mine is a 5 lug setup, and the 4wd is 6 lug - does that make any difference? I had grabbed a ring & pinion out of a 4wd rear, and the bolts didn't line up... so try the front?

-stagger - I will try those recommendations....

on 86-95 4wd, the rear is 8" and the IFS front is 7.5"
that's why trike suggested getting the IFS "front" since your 2wd is 7.5"

Only if you aren't doin it yourself. Labor on rear ends can get expensive. Pretty easy to bolt in a 3rd if you find one.
The Ecology on Imperial Hwy in Norwalk, usually has a decent selection of yotes, 2wd and 4wd.

Just swapping 3rds, lugs wont change because you will use the same outers/axles. Like Abe and Trike said. 7.5 4wd IFS 3rd into 2wd rear. Done.

where do you plan on putting this

in the Rear axle?!!

yes the front ifs is 7.5 and the rear 2wd is 7.5.... but you cannot put a IFS front 3rd in the rear of a 2wd truck...... you will have to reset the gears.

another suggestion is watch craigslist for a narrow 4wd rear end.. you'll have to get new tires for the rear (and will have 5lug front and 6 lug rear) but it will give you SOA and the 8" gears

Ah... yeah... gears only for me... LOL

as for the two different lug setups - don't think I want to go there. My luck would be that whichever rim I have as a spare, the opposite would go flat on me.

Short of pulling the whole thing apart and counting gears, is there any way to visibaly/externally tell what the gear setup is? don't want to waste half my day at the junk yard tearin into 20 different trucks/4runners..

I just found a new place (new to me) in Santa Ana that claims the largest Toyota and Nissan mini truck wrecking yard in So CAl. PM me if you need the info ttlycnfuzed.

I am going to pick up a 22r block from them this weekend for $120, re-buildable shortblock w/crank rods and pistons. I'll let you know what it looks like.
