Got a carb'd 4runner which had been sitting for the last 5 years with a nearly empty tank. The pickup screen in the tank is toast. I was thinking about reassembling without it, but I would probably suck a rust flake into the tube when I least want to. The local NAPA says they can't get such a beast. Any options or am I calling Toyota? I think the tube is something like 3/16 although I haven't measured it for sure yet.

The EFI screen is a little different. From the FSM diagram the EFI pickup screen appears to sit perpendicular to the end of the tube (which runs verticle). The carb pickup screen sits parallel and slides over the end of the tube (which runs horizontal), then locks into place with a little plastic snappy piece. I've attached a pic of the carb'd pickup & screen.

 

What year 4runner, 84? I can look up the part on my microfiche slides and give you the part#. Then you can either purchase it at a discount from 1sttoyotaparts.com or from strap22, who sells genuine toyota parts at a discounted price.

I'm not familiar with the 4runner's VIN# system. If you give me the first 7 digits of your vin, I'll be able to figure it out. It'll be something like JT4 and either RN or LN. I believe 4runners are LN, but I want to make sure. Thanks

 

You were close. The VIN starts out with JT3RN65. I would guess that the part is the same as for a shortbed pickup (and maybe longbed?), but maybe not.

You know i had the same problem with my pick up. Except the pick up screen was rusted off of the sending unit. So we just got some thick hose and some 3/16 pipe and just made our own. It would be easier if you drop the tank and clean that tank out real good. Trust me i wish i would of done that now. I have to change fuel filters bout every fill up.

Carolina_yota: Yes, I know I should drop the tank and clean it real well, but this is only a secondary project, so I'm half-assing it for now. I'll drop the tank and clean it later. Picked up a 22r for $50 that needed a new timing chain and just want to have it running a little in this 4runner before it sits too long. In addition to the huge amount of goo in the pickup (and the destroyed pickup screen), the fuel sender is not working. I fished a wire down into the tank and unstuck the float from the bottom of the tank (and now it floats), but the sender still doesn't work. I'll worry about it later (maybe when I drop the tank). Maybe the sender/float can just be cleaned up to make it work again.

O yea and on my truck the float and all that was rusted off and was in the bottom of the tank. So i just used a peace o hose pipe to check to see how much gas i had. Yea i pretty much half-assed it to.

 

The part # for the gas tank pickup filter is 77023-12050. Was told that the above part # is for a diesel (but can't confirm that).

Anyway, got the engine to start (at least for a little bit w/o hooking up all the vacuum junk), but it sounds like it has a loose piston bouncing around. Sounds OK while cranking, but not once it tries to run. Anything I should look for? Unfortunately, I didn't take a close look at the valves while I had the head off. The pistons and cylinders looked OK from above. Noticed that the valves were a fair bit out of adjustment before I started the job. Put timing chain and all back together as usual. I might pull the oil pan again and look more carefully from below to see what's going on. Was told by the PO that the engine had developed a knock, but figured it was the timing chain (since the tensioner failed and it was eating the cover). Afraid it might be more severe than that.

 

Is it difficult to drop the fuel tank and clean it? What do you clean it with? I definitely would like to do this. I went through 3 fuel filters in the last year.

Not too tough to drop and clean the tank. Just drop the skid (might want to wd40 the bolts first and take it easy if they are rusty), pull the plug on the bottom to drain the gas, and drop the tank. You might slosh a gallon of carb cleaner around inside (although you would want to remove the sending unit and maybe the pickup which would probably result in the need for new gaskets). The carb cleaner may or may not do the job by itself depending on how rusty your tank is.
