engine running great. exhaust smells very rich?

I have to admit that exhaust issues tend to baffle me.

Had a difficult time passing smog a year back so I installed a new cat 1 year ago, now im smelling a very odorous, rich exhaust smell every time i run the truck. To the point where it is nauseating and gives me a headache.

I understand it could be a range of different problems from spark plugs, o2 sensor, carburetor issues, etc..... I also understand that a new cat can go bad within days if the truck isn't burning right.

Any ideas or input is appreciated many times over as I am with little clue on where to begin with this problem???

thanks

Getting a smog test would tell you what gasses are being released in excess and would help narrow down the area of problem.

Knowing whether you're carb'd or EFI would help to.

oh yeah. The truck is 1985 pick up 22r, carb'd. Going to run 'guaranteed to pass formula' through it and have smog test done this week. I have a strong feeling it is going to fail. The smell is ridiculous.

I would have the smog test done without the guaranteed to pass... at least that way you can get a good reading and troubleshoot accurately from there.

Carb out of adjustment? Not using OEM or NGK plugs? Valves not Properly adjusted? Airfilter dirty?

I agree with Team420 about not using the guarantee formula, this is only a temporary solution and not the answer. You might need a new cat every two years due to the original problem. Get the readings and post. If you have the old readings from the last smog check post them too.

That pass in a can only works if you're close to the maximum limits not way over. Don't use it. Its expensive and hard to get your $$ back. Go to a pass or don't pay smog shop.
