I am driving home from school and i notice that it is harder to stop than usual. When i get home i look at my front brakes and they are smoking. So i though it would be an easy fix just change brake pads and rotors... of chorus everything has to be difficult this proves nearly impossible. Does anyonehave any suggestions on how to get the cone washers out of the free wheeling hubs?

 

ok use a torch heat them up and tap the side with a hammer and they will fly out in no time!sounds like a seized caliper~!

place a brass drift (use brass because it's softer that the stud material) on the end of one of the studs, and give a quick tap to the end of the drift with a small mallet. A couple of hits should pop the cone washers right out. Be careful... sometimes they blast out of there pretty quick.

 

I forgot to mention that when we looked at the brake pads there was plenty left on them at least on one side but the rotors were a little thin.

 

By the way... it doesn't sound like a simple "replace rotors and pads" job. If your brakes were smoking hot, some of your caliper pistons are sticking. You need to either rebuild your calipers, or replace them with new (or remanufactured) ones. When you remove the calipers, check to see which pistons don't move freely.

 

How do i check that which ones are moving freely and which ones are not?

 

With the pads out and caliper off the rotor, it should be quite easy to press the pistons in with either some large channel lock pliers or a c-clamp. It shouldn't take much force to push them in. Just check that they move freely... don't push them way in, because you can overflow your brake fluid reservoir that way. Also, do one side at a time, and while you're working on a caliper, put a block of wood or something between the pistons in the other caliper (or install it back on the rotor with the pads in place)... just to make sure that you don't accidentally pop out one of its pistons.

 

On the 85 22re power booster there's an adustable plunger rod tip. When I had a guy adjust it wrong my brakes were locking up on the freeway. I believe the adjustment is in the FSM. You remove the master cylinder to access.
