egr help

kinda an amateur question but there are two hoses on my egr valve.. and i need to test the actuation on my egr there is a small hose on the top and a large hose on the far bottom both come from the egr modulator. which do i apply vaccum to?

Top one from the EGR modulator operates the valve actuator to open and close it. That is the one to apply vacuum to.
