On Board Air ?

I would like to put together an on board air system for my truck, ive been looking at two different ways of doing it. the first one would be a Viair on board air system, there heavy duty kit has everything needed to put a complete on board air system in your truck and it costs a little over 400 dollars.
The second idea i had was getting a york a/c compressor and mounting it to my 22R engine and making my own on board air system. it would seem to me that the york compressor would be the better way to go because it would be more durable, ive heard of to many electric compressors burning up from being over used. I need thoughts and opinions on this and if the york is the best way to go, then can someone post a picture of there set up and the parts needed to hook everything up.

Get a 100% duty cycle electric and it can run practically forever. I have had mine running 45-60 minutes a few times when I had the only working compressor in the grounp. Had to air up 6-8 trucks:

Have had the compressor for 10+ years and it is still going strong.

A York also is good, you'll need to fab up a bracket and what not. Or you can use the stock A/C compressor and convert that to air.

These guys have some decent deals. I personally would just get a portable 400 100% duty and be done for little over 200$.

I don't really see the need for a tank unless you have ARBs. You aren't gonna get much tire inflation out of a 5 gal tank and you aren't gonna run air tools for more than a few seconds on one either. Just my opinion.

I find an air tank is always a plus if you can work one into the system. I have 2 gallons in my front bumper and it'll shave 1 minute off of airing up all 4 tires at one time (6 mins vs. 7). Not that big a deal but a minute is a minute. And if you fill one tire at a time, the time savings is even more as the compressor can keep running while you move from tire to tire. In that case, I would save 4 minutes, since I would get that same 1 minute boost on each tire.

ya, not loosing the air between tires is a nice advantage, I guess I'm just not in that big of a hurry. If you do decide to get a tank, you should opt for the 150PSI tank and compressor as opposed to the 90PSI ones. You will get alot more bang for your gallon with those.

Another option is to get a CO2 tank. You can get ones specifically for offroading or get a beer one for cheaper and then get the anti freeze nozzle for it.

I do want a tank, because i will eventualy have an ARB in the front axle.

i have MV-50 (review http://www.parksoffroad.com/prodrevi...mv50/mv50.htm), and i saw them recently at costco for $75. i think that is a good deal compared to the identical unit branded by viair fo0r several hundred dollars. i am considering picking another one up just to put on the shelf. i never timed my air-up, but it is not a long time. read the comparo on that website...

I just picked up a 5 gallon air tank at harbor frieght for about 15 bucks today. There on sale for 17.99 and i got a 15 percent off coupon through the mail because i subscribe. I dont know how long my MF 1050 will take to fill it due to a leak i had to fix on the compressor but i will find out.

I got a few questions... what pressure switch range would you guys run? Also im looking to buy a one way valve or somthing that wont keep the high pressure in my compressor itself after it stops. what do i need to do this? lastly where is the best place to find fittings and adaptors for compressor? like i need a 1/2 npt fitting for the tank since the one that came with it wont work. Would home depot ber a good place or irrigation places?

deserttoy, i think home depot will have everything you need, if your local supply store is already out of business. i found what i needed to do a 4crawler-style four way air system, which makes tire maintenance on the subie a no-brainer too.

please post some picks here when ur done.

I got my system finished a few months ago and finally took pics. I mounted the compressor behind the drivers seat so it wouldnt be in the elements because its not a sealed compressor. I wired it up with a relay under the hood and switch on the dash. I ran some 1/4 ID polyurethane tubing rated up to 120psi(100psi max system) to a 5 gallon tank i got at HF for cheap. I used a one way valve from grainger to hold the air pressure in the tank. Then i ran a standard fitting on the output to hook up my 25ft air line i got.I got a 100 off and 75 or 80 on pressure switch from a friend. I havent timed the compressor on how long it takes to fill the tank but i want to say about 3-4 minutes to fill 5 gallons to 100psi. The whole system cost me about 80-100 to make. If anyone wants part numbers or has any questions just PM me. pics are attached...

I have an Extreme Air 100% duty cycle compressor with (3) 2.5 gallon ViAir tanks...it can run forever. Anything less than a 100% duty cycle compressor and you will eventually burn it up if you use it.

I just converted my A/C compresor to an air compressor. I have a 3 gal tank in the rear and I can air up all four tires (34x10.50x17) In about 3 min. I am using a 4air like setup I made. I didn't know there was a production model of the thing I made. But i would never run an electric compressor. that is just my opinion. just think how long a regular a/c compressor lasts...... I run mine at 106 off and it kicks on at 120 I think. I can post pics after I leave work if ya want. Bill

I agree with Brian. Anything less than 100% duty cycle and you will eventually burn it up. I have the Viar system with the 2.5 gal. tank. Its plumbed for my ARB and has a manifold for an air hose. I also have a hose ran to the front bumper with a quick connect for folks on the trail to be able to use.

I paid less then 100.00 dollar for my entire system and IT WORKS. When it burns up ill buy another 50 dollar compressor. But for now its going strong like when i bought it day one.
