Okay, so I just got an 1985 Toyota Extra Cab 5speed EFI SR5 4x4... first truck of this age group I've owned, drove or really even looked at for that matter so be easy on me
... my other Toyota Trucks that I have/owned were an 1994 & 1995 early.
Have a couple "issues" I'm addressing ...
This thing will start without depressing the clutch, which isn't a HUGE deal just would like to know; SHOULD this thing have a Neutral Safety Switch for a manual trans of this year? I tried searching the forums but only stuff I seemed to come up with was a few threads on Automatics having them.
If it is supposed to have one, where are these typically located? I never had to mess with one, would this be at the pedal area of the truck or on the trans itself?
If its any help to troubleshoot it also doesn't turn the reverse lights on when I put it into reverse... bulbs and fuses are cool... I have a reverse switch on order from Toyota. (hoping that's the fix)
I don't know if 85s had a safety switch but if it does it would be on the clutch pedal. There is no neutral safety switch on a manual, they have a switch on the clutch pedal that only allows starting when the pedal is depressed. If you look up to the top of the clutch pedal there will be a switch attached to the bracket.
And with the reverse lights you can check if it's the switch by just jumping the 2 wires that go to the switch. If the lights go on then it's a bad switch, if not there is another problem. You may want to check before you get the new switch because you probably won't be able to return it.

I will give it a look... maybe the clutch pedal depression switch or whatever that would be called doesn't exist on 85's I will get under there and look.
as far as the reverse switch and jumping it to test it. THATS definitely the right way. HOWEVER I am all for just buying it and trying it LOL... it was only 34 bucks from Toyota.
anyone have an 85 that you need to press the clutch in to be able to start it???
Yep, no NSS or clutch cancel switch in the '85 models, I think that started in '86. For the reverse light switch, it is in the transmission, driver's side near the fill plug. See if it is plugged in or if the wiring is damaged.

Not to hi-jack my own thread or anything. someone who will stay un-named said that the standard cab long bed and the extra cab short beds use a drivershaft /bearing carrier combo type drive line. Is this true??? my extra cab short bed only has two u-joints and a one piece driveshaft. (it was damn near as stock as it gets so I would like to believe thats the right setup??)

You'll find both types of drive shaft setups under the 2nd gen long bed and extra cab pickups. Seems to be no rhyme or reason to which drive shaft went in which type of truck. Most got the 2-piece shaft with center support bearing, but some got the 1-piece with u-joints like the short wheel base vehicles did.
So with no NSS and not seeing any kind of switch whatsoever attached to clutch pedal does that mean that I can start this truck without pressing in the clutch. I see the brake switch and then I also see another one but... Here. So what is this on the steering column? There are a lot of pieces from my truck missing, for instance no compressor. No NSS? So what is this?
Yep, no NSS or clutch cancel feature in the '85 models AFAIK. I think that started in the '86 models. I start in gear all the time on the trail when in low range. Works great for starting out on a steep uphill, just turn the key and go.
