Heater was working great then this morning it just didnt get warm, blower is working just no heat. Temp gauge was where it always is. I did a search a not sure if anybody has had this problem before. any advise is appreciated. 20min commute so plenty of time to get warm

 

check the heater core....pressure test?

 

I hope not but could be, hoping maybe a relay or fuse but that would be to easy.

 

i would pressure test it to be sure. a fuse or relay shouldnt stop your heat from working. does it get somewhat warm then cold?

 

It worked great yesterday, but this morning it just never got warm. I tried it on def, heat, vent, fresh air, rec air but no warmth. My truck didnt come w/ air cond so if I lose the heater I have nothing. I guess I'll call my yota dealership

 

Check that the cable is still attached to the heater valve on the firewall:



If that is OK, make sure the valve is operating internally and not clogged. Then try backflushing the heater core (i.e. force water through the outlet line) and see if it runs through or not.

 

You may also need to make sure that there isn't a clog going to your heater core. If you're not losing coolant, you're probably not going to find a problem with a preasure test. If the core is plugged then you're warm water can't flow through the core.

Odds are, if you're cable was broken, your cool-warm selector would feel different. if that's normal and you don't have a coolant leak, there is probably a clog somewhere and you'll have to find it and release it...

 

Well on my lunch I checked out the hoses and all are there and hooked up, no coolant leak but I did discover the fuse in the cabin labeled defog was blown so replaced it and well see on the way home this evening.

 

Bwhite and I put some stop leak in his radiator last night to take care of a little leak he had around his upper radiator hose and thermostat housing. Could that have anything to do with his problem? He said it is not leaking anymore. Could that stop leak cause an issue? (He did torque the thermostat housing bolts to where they need to be and they were a little loose so we should be good there.)

 

That stop leak crap is more than likely your problem. Now you'll have to back flush with a cleaner to get it out. the leak may come back so you'll have to fix that with a new gasket this time. The quick fix is rarely the right fix.

PS glad to see you found another 84. Good luck with it. I have a guy picking mine up today. His daughter is a missionary in Haitie and he's shipping down to her. I told him I'd look for it on CNN with a 50 cal mounted to the roll bar.

Found the problem my heater cable was broken, it didn't feel any diff but it was broken in two pieces. Bowhunter congrats on the sale, that would be a awsome sight with a 50 cal on it. Toyota should consider it for an accessory on the new Tundra HaHa

 

I was gonna say it has to be the cable, on my 87 it broke right where it hooks up behind the dash cover for the heater controls, poped cover off, I took a needle nose plyers and made another loop and put it back in the hole of the temp control and crimped it together...I'm glad you found the problem. Salvage yard is a great place to get new cable from. Either a 2WD or 4WD control cable will work, both are the same...
