Just curious on what kind of clearance you had on the oil pan after the lifted springs went in? I assume it wasn't exactly 4inches.
Also I had no idea w58 would bolt to the G trans in early 80's. With that did you just order flywheel and clutch setup for a late 80's supra that came with the w58?

I just measured and the distance is about 4 inches. I was also surprised to find that the bellhousings were interchangeable but it should be noted that the W58 housings are expensive. For the clutch/flywheel, I used the factory 1995 SC-300 setup. In essence, from the bellhousing forward is a SC-300 and the transmission back is a 4runner.
A lot has happened since my last post. I removed the broken brown dash and replaced it with a clean (for the most part) grey dash. While I had the dash out, I removed all the wiring and cut-out the dead wires. I think I may have removed one wire for the A/C. Unfortunately the pictures are on my old dead phone. All this occurred last summer.
Since then I purchased a 2019 WRX STI.
Then decided it was not ideal for my lifestyle and traded it in for a 2020 Tacoma TRD Off-road.
I also have been remodeling my home so this poor 4runner is on hold until the home is finished and sold.
Below are the pictures from the factory spark-plug wires to the IS-300 wasted spark conversion. I removed the factory bracket and used it to create brackets to the coil-packs.

As I mentioned before, I found a "clean" grey dash and interior pieces. I removed the old dash and cut out the unused wires. I also removed the heater core and AC evaporator. Currently they have not been replaced so no AC or Heat. In Arizona, the heater is not as much of a concern but it would be nice to get that AC working. I also labeled the gauges and turn signals.
This is great. I was planning on doing a 3RZ swap in my 85 4Runner, but I keep having nagging doubts about the work for the minor power gains over a 22RE. I recently grabbed a 2JZ-GE from a 2000 GS300 at a salvage yard for $190. I was gonna sell it but I may do the 2JZ swap instead of the 3RZ. I was afraid of pounding out the firewall and cutting up the radiator support to make it fit, but it looks like you did not have to do any of that. What did you do for a trans mount?

You're right, I didn't have to do any serious modifications to the radiator core support or the firewall. I think most people cut the core support to make it easier to remove the engine and transmission while still attached. If I need to remove the engine the transmission must be removed first.
I'm using the factory transmission mount and I have only one transfer-case -- no modifications are necessary.
I'm not sure what the power gains are of the 3RZ over the 2JZ but here are my dyno results at the rear wheels when the ECU was tuned. 180hp @ 5900 rpm & 174 lbft of torque @ 5000 rpm.

This is for a member who asked me about the some hurdles during the swap and wanted to post the pics for everyone's viewing pleasure.
One issue I noticed during the build was how close the thermostat housing was to the radiator (see post #23). To correct this, I removed the 2jz factory power steering pump reservoir and installed a suction union joint. With this installed, I was able to reuse the 4runners factory power steering reservoir.

Then I had the thermostat housing modified to exit the straight out of the block which allows for a 90 degree hose to be used.

I know it's been a few years since your 2jz swap, but are you able to recollect how much the swap costed in total? Your post is fantastic in itemizing everything, just curious of what the cost was at the time. I just picked up a complete and running 2jz-ge with harness (for $500, 180k ) and have plans to eventually swap it into my 1986 4runner, however I'm debating on procrastinating the swap since I'm about to start an expensive flight school journey..... maybe I'll sell my 04 WRX to fund the project :'''),,:
P.s., if you're ever in Moab's neck of the woods or southern Utah, we should hit some trails sometime!
I actually have most of the expenses itemized. I’m accountant so we’ll chalk this one up to an occupational hazard.
Here’s the breakdown just for the engine swap.
tweaked performance engine harness - $1,269.08
AEM engine management system with required sensors - $2,022.61
Tune - $903.32
BIC racing engine mounts - $350 (estimate)
w58 bell housing from EBay - $350 (estimate)
Used coil packs from a junkyard - $109.70
Clutch kit from rock auto - $300 (estimate)
for a grand total of $5,304.71
unfortunately, I don’t have the 4Runner any longer. I moved to Cali and this state doesn’t take kindly to motor swaps - they have to pass BAR if they’re subject to smog and it’s a complicated process. I still have the 2jz though and plan to put it in a pre-smog fj40 eventually.
Here’s my new project. It’s a 1972 hilux (pre-smog!) that I’m putting on a 1980 frame. I’ll do another build of this one once I have more content.
I’ll definitely take you up on a tour of moab trails next time I’m in the area!
That's a real bummer you had to get rid of it! Any idea where it is now? I wonder if the new owner wants some cash for it
The hilux looks like a fun new project for you! It's a shame we hadn't connected sooner as my 1986 4runner came from Cali and is completely smog passing and legal with ice cold AC, not sure if you would've traded but perhaps it would've been a good option.
Thank you for the itemized list! I'm budgeting around that number plus a little more, as I still need to find an R series transmission.... I'm not sure I'd trust my w56 behind a 2jz, lol.
