84 22R Direct Fit Alternator Upgrade?

Hey folks,

I know that the alternator issue has been driven into the ground, so I just wanted to add another shovel of dirt here. I have searched and not found a definitive answer yet.

I just added AC to my 84 22R pickup. Right now, I am all stock with the addition of AC. Things work great on the electrical/power for now. I am going to be swapping my stock fan for an e-fan, so I am now thinking that I may be getting ready to overtax the stock alternator.

I know that I can do a GM 1-wire swap and I have a buddy that could do the fab stuff, however, I am trying to see if there is an alternator upgrade that is a DIRECT fit for the stock mounts for my 84 22R. I can most likely figure out the wiring in the long run. I am not looking at the high dollar swaps that you can find at the alternator specialists online and I am also not looking to send my current alternator off to have it rebuilt.

I truly am looking to see if there is a direct swap that I could run out to a junk yard, if needed, and get. I know that very similar questions have been asked several times, but there never seems to be a definitive answer or when someone says there is, they never seem to come back and tell what the direct fit unit is.
THANKS!

haha you have more options the 94 models 22rec came with a better altenator then our oem all you have to do is grind the edge down about 1/2 inch (if that). then it will bolt in with your regular set up.

Thanks 4Crawler. I saw that Mobi-Arc kit the other day, which is what got me thinking about alternators I could swipe from a junk yard without any major fab work or special orders. It looks like Raddude has a pretty viable solution for a junk yard pull. It sounds like I would just have to grind a little and the 94 model alternator would be a direct fit for the 84 model...

Thanks!

It looks like the 93-95 22RE should be the same and they are, from what the FSM says, a 60A model. This would definitely be better than the 40A version I have now and would allow me to add an e-fan with the air conditioner at the same time. I can also get a new 70A at most parts stores as well.

I talked to Mobi-Arc (Perfect Switch) this evening and they told me that they no longer do alternator upgrade stators. They also told me that the upgrade stators were only for the 60A and not the 40A.

Raddude, I haven't looked at one yet, but is it one of the mounting ears that will need to be ground down?

Thanks!

I have an 81 22r, will that 130 amp alt. overcharge my system, and will my same voltage regulator & battery work? Ive been looking for an upgrade, my headlights/dash/etc. dim when i bang through gears. I actually just read that the 130 and 160 amp alts. have internal voltage regulators. Do you leave your Volt reg. on the fender hooked up? or remove it somehow

From my puny research... The 130 will not overcharge the system. The battery will be fine. You will want to upgrade the battery cable, though. Since it has the internal regulator and the 81 has the external, you will simply bypass the regulator. If you search on here, there are several write-ups with the color codes of the wires and what they go to. You may want to go to a junk yard and pick up a pigtail that will connect to that alternator because the connector for the back of the alternator will be different. I haven't looked at the diagrams to check color codes, but you should be able to find that information pretty quick on here by searching for alternator upgrades.
