Unhappy '84 22r carb? fuel pump?

ok boys, here's the scoop. my 1986 22r started 'chugging' a few weeks ago, every gear all speeds. lower speeds seemed to be a bit worse. i had to leave town and it sat for 12 days. now i'm back and the darn thing won't start. the engine will turn a bit and it really sounds like she wants to start but nothing
i initially thought the chugging would be some sort of fuel pump or fuel line issue that i'd take care of it when i got back. but this not starting thing makes me think that maybe there is also a carburetor problem. maybe?

so, what do you think is wrong and can i fix it myself? i'd like to try and fix it myself if i can. i haven't done much but change the oil and the clutch slave cylinder.

thanks!

It could possibly be the choke on the carb, but have you tried jumping it? My truck likes to not start in the cold, guess my CCA at 80 amps isn't enough to start it, but yeah I just jump it and it fires right up.
Also you could try putting some starting fluid in it...
On the carb you have a few settings that you can adjust, if you have a chilton's manual you can find all these with ease.

Hope that helps a bit, but yes I would say you can fix it yourself.

Not a bad idea to replace the fuel filter, too. Is it the stock carb? Is there fuel in the float bowl?

Yep, if it's the fuel pump, it's super easy. Two bolts, three lines. You should be able to tell if the pump isn't working right just by moving the lever with your hand.

I think thats whats wrong with mine too. Mine would chug n all that in 5th gear a few times last week and then today i started it drove 10 feet then died. i removed the hoses on the pump and no fuel would spit out. there was suction however. but i beieve it was too weak. becasue i already changed the fuel filter. gonna replace the pump tomorrow.

Or the siphon line in the gas tank itself.
