$300 4runner

I bought this 85 SR5 4runner for $300. It has new 5.23 gears w/ loc right's and a new transmission. It had a blown head gasket when I bought it. I checked compression had a 180 PSI in all cyclinders. I checked the head once it was off and found the head was cracked. I got a rebuilt head, instaled new head, hoses, t-stat, and changed the oil twice after repair. Truck ran great for a while and then started knocking. Removed pan and found one bearing had spun. I removed all the bearings and found they had rusted, the truck sat for five years. So my question is can I use a real fine emory cloth on the crank and put new rod bearings in it? The crank is not scored. If I need to rebuild it should I rebuilt the 22re or put a chevy 4.3 in? I have a holley TBI and a computer for a 4.3, bought to swap in the future. I plan on using the truck as a back up vehicle, camping, and light trail play. Any information would be great, thanks for looking.

Seriously! That's such a good price. Just the solid axle and the lockrights are worth more than that.

I would take it to a machine shop and let them polish the crank. It is very important that the mains and rods have the bearings match the journals or you will spin a bearing. The shop I used in Raleigh, NC only charged $50.00 to polish the journals. They will mic them to let you know if the stock bearing can be purchased or if you will need to get some that are undersized.

The other route is to do as another poster suggested and get a crank kit.

P.S. Is this your truck?

Thank you for the feedback. I guess I will tear it down. My 87 runner is torn down also. I might just fix the 87 runner and build the 85 for trails. Yes that pic is my truck. That is the after pic after a few hours of pressure washing with bleech and water to remove all the grim. I will post inside pics later. The previous owner tore all the panels out on the inside, but they are all there along w/ the SR5 seats. I will rino line the inside from the firewall to the tailgate.

Wow! What a great find for 300 bones! I'm about to spend a couple thousand for what that truck has on it for axles, springs, wheels and tires. I may hold out and shop for a used parts truck now.
