1985 buying advice, should I buy this?
I'm checking out this 4runner tomorrow afternoon Asking price is $2500. It's a 1985 sr5. 3 inch lift, new 33" tires with spare. Engine has 100k on rebuild. Front and rear axles were rebuilt this year too and regeared for 4.88.
I've owned an 86 4runner before and an older tacoma so I know how to work on these trucks but the rear fender rust is what I'm worried about. The fronts I would just buy new ones and bolt them on but I don't know about the backs. I know about fiberglass replacements but I'm worried about rust on the tub. The truck has spent it's life in colorado so maybe it won't be too bad though.
I have a good friend that is a welder but I won't be a be to get him to to work on the truck until this summer probably.

I agree with the previous replies. With the good condition of the interior but all that body damage, this vehicle is ready to become a full-time off-road beater truck (it looks like it already was) that you can recoup most of your purchase costs by gutting and selling interior parts. That center console is worth quite a bit as is the gauge cluster. If the rear seats are embroidered with the sr5 logo, they're valuable too.
Another thing to think about is that 100k on a rebuilt 22re is probably nearing the end of it's useful life before it needs major repairs or parts replacement. It's due for a new timing set right now, at the very least.
Depending on what your expected use of this vehicle is, it could be a very good deal.

I can't see the pics, work blocks a lot of image sites, but if you are going to buy a beat up 30 year old 4Runner, 85 is certainly the year to buy. $2500 for a running driving truck doesn't sound too bad, obviously I'd work them down on price. Good luck!

if you don't want the inclinometer and its great working condition you might be able to get $250+ for it. Check Ebay
the sellers comment about the rust being nothing serious- that is incorrect, that stuff is a mess. doubt it was a CO truck
I am pretty sure that I found the ad for the truck

1985 Toyota 4Runner SR5 - $2500 (Denver)
Selling my 85 4Runner. 22RE 4 cylinder, 290,000 miles on the body, about 100,000 on the engine, 5 speed manual, 4WD with manual locking hubs, 3 inch lift with 33" BFG All Terrains with tons of tread still left, a full size spare, the front axle and knuckles were rebuilt a few years ago, regeared to 4.88, the rear axle is a refurbished axle off an 87 also rebuilt and regeared to 4.88, new plugs and wires, new battery, cold air intake, Grant steering wheel, new rear shocks put on last year, the topper comes on and off and has no leaks, the rear window still works, it's an SR5 so has the in-dash meters and altimeter which all work, removable moonroof, hi-jack lift with custom mount on roll bar. It's in great shape considering the age. The usual rust in the wheel wells but nothing too serious, needs a rear bumper. Wish I didn't have to part with it but in a financial bind and need the money. This truck has taken me to some amazing places and is very capable. Be a great truck to turn into a full time rock crawler.

Buy it..............
When you do keep me in mind for the console and shifter bezel amd SR5 cluster if it's manual trans opps, I see that it is. Maybe the complete dash in gray....
Please put me on the top of the list for thoses items in you buy and part it out!
Good luck

Buy it.
Key factor: Think how much it costs others to SAS their IFS compared to the $2500 asking price.
Bargain a little if possible.

Are you the same guy that posted this same post on IH8MUD?
Truck had fender flares on it so bad rust may be limited to those areas. Front fenders are rough too given the rust through holes above flares. Plan on mechanical issues also its just the nature of a used rig.
Depending on what you want to do with truck and your abilities could be a great project. But I will tell you from experience weekend building a daily driver sounds better than it works in reality.
Building a SFA truck has its benefits but the price difference between that and a SAS rig is not that big of a difference. Depending on what front axles go for in your area.
