So my parents just game an 81 pickup 2wd with a 22r.
Drove it home 160 miles.
Moved it the next day and the water pump is leaking.

I have Removed the four nuts from the fluid coupling flange.
Now from what i gather from the manual this should just come off.
This is not the case, am i missing something here?

there are 6-8 bolts that go through the water pump into the engine and a couple of nuts too i think. you have to remove all of those and then if there is a seal on it you may have to stick a flathead or a small chisel in between the pump and the engine and pry it off

all of the holes on that pic either have a bolt you have to remove or a nut. just make sure you put them all back in the right place haha

 

Ok let me clarify. It's actually the fan clutch and assembly that I cannot get removed from the old water pump.
The nuts have been removed and the assembly will not budge, thus I cannot even get back to the pump.

 

Belt is loosened? Give it a whack, should slide right off

 

Yeah i pulled the belt off around the fan. i tried getting between the pulley and the fluid coupling (where it meets the pulley, on mine its blue) with a screwdriver and tapping on that between the two did not make a difference. so just smack the blue part a few times and it should come off? I'm just afraid of bending or breaking parts.

I'm on the small side myself, so I use a BFH...a Big F'n Hammer. Sounds like it's been a while since that pulley has been removed. Put a block of wood against it and whack it with a bfh from a couple different directions. Should come off no problems.

 

Hit it with your purse a few more times.

 

Yeah its looking like the original pump but its got 350k on the engine.

If that doesn't work, save up some change so the purse is heavier and try again.

On the serious side...Use a drift and a 3lb sludge to give the a good rap at the base of the fan clutch where it meets the pully so that the force is sidways or at a 90* angle to the studs. A piece of wood might absorb too much of the force because what your looking for is the sudden jarring of a rap to knock the fine rust loose. .....

Ok got it loose.
I ended up with a 2# sledge, a 2x4, and some pb blaster.
Knocked it loose after a few good smacks,
