Temperature gauge/sending unit
My temp gauge is not working and I've looked around and found two plugs...the green one is hooked up, the brown one is not. I bought a new temp sensor and I think I know where it goes, but wanted to get some feedback. it looks as though the brown connection hasn;t been hooked up in a while...but can anyone tell me what is going on with the connection that is to the right of the green connector? This is all on top of the thermostat housing.
Thanks
this is the gauge that I got...can this be made to work?...they had one that cost $50....this one cost $14.
also, while looking around, I noticed two vacume lines that have been closed off with screws, and I did not see where they would connect. This ok?
Thanks

You are definitely on the right track to getting your temp gauge working. I am running into similar problems with mine. In the first pic you posted the brown plug on the right is the plug for your temperature-sending unit. The nut right under the plug in the pic with the weird center is a temperature-sending unit that was broken off. With a 6 point socket that will come right out and you can pop your new one in and take it from there. As far as your thermostat housing that is what the metal tube is in the bottoms of the pick the thermostat is under that. The screws in the vac line looks rigged find a vac diagram and see where they are suppose to be. Good luck hope this is helpful my mechanic vocab may not be that good this my 1st post.

ok...well what is the green plug? i'll get some pics later, but i unscrewed both of them..the one broken off and the green one...and the green one appreared to have a sensor that went down into the coolant, and the broken off one appeared to be just a plug with a flat bottom...it didn't look like it would even touch coolant. so, i took out the green plug, cut off the connector, spliced on a female connector and used that temp sender I bought in place of the green plug, but nothing changed.

so it appears that those vacume lines go to the BVSV, which I guess I don't need. SO the green plug would be for the temp sensor. thanks for the pic, but it shows two thermo switches, and on my motor, I don't see that. I only see one plug that could be for a temp switch. also, what does that brown wire go to? possibly another temp switch?
thanks

Just checked on my truck. Yep, the sender you bought goes where I circled and the brown wire goes there and should be for the temp gauge. The green plug also seems to be a temp sender of some sort but not for the gauge. Reason I know this is b/c mine is not plugged in and my gauge works. Maybe something for the A/C?

yea...i worked on it the other day. i connected the brown wire to the spot you circled, and now the gauge works...it only moves up a little, just slightly above the first line, but its better than before. i just want it to work so I'll know if it starts to heat up before I blow the HG. I put the new sender that I bought in place of the green plug and did not change out the other one.

My temp gauge has the same symptom - only moves about a needle's width and I know it can't be running THAT cool. I crimped a new end on the wire to no avail. I picked up a new sending unit the other day - worst case scenario in my mind is I wasted like 10 bucks which is not a huge biggie in my books. I will report in if I find anything that might help you fix your's. Good luck! I may take my sweet ol' time of getting back in here though since there is 3 feet of snow on my truck right now and I'm in no hurry to deal with it!

So I finally did put that temperature sender in my truck. The needle had only been "peeking" up past the "C" on the gauge. The needle now seems to sit just low of the middle of the gauge which is what I would expect with a 160 degree thermostat.
The old sender seemed to have a little slime on it but nothing too extraordinary. Not sure if it could have just been cleaned but with this old truck I figure anything you can justify replacing is worth doing so - nothing lasts forever.

The sending unit to the left in the photo is a temperature switch for the emissions computer, the temperature switch in the middle is for A/C if equipped or if truck is Calf. model or hight altitude model would be the second emission computer temperature switch and the one to the right should be your temperature gauge sender.
