Stalling issue

I have a DD 81 Pickup with the 22r and I am new to the first gen trucks. I am having an issue with the truck stalling out on me. It starts fine and the high idle works fine and when it is warm it idles fine. The problem I am having is after about 5 mins of driving if I am sitting at a stop light (which I often am during my commute) It will just stall out and die. If I catch it in time and tap the throttle it will go back to idle fine, and it restarts pretty easily if I don't catch it in time. If I am driving during the 5 min mark I do not have the problem. I just don't know where to start looking for the problem, if it idles fine then when the choke goes fully off it should not die. Any suggestions?

Could just be a simple throttle adjustment. I'm assuming it has a factory carb?

Check your normal idle adjustment, but make sure that you note where it was originally position before you start because if it doesn't fix your problem, those stock aisin carbs can be a real pain in the ass to tune.

I had close to the same problem with mine, but 79 20r, with smog pump and all the stock emissions still on. Choke would turn off on mine, push the clutch in and it would fall on its face unless I floated the gas pedal. My big problem on mine was the fuel cut off solenoid, had one little copper strand left at the back of it so it was kind intermittent. Should be a 2-3in cylinder with a wire coming out, unplug it and run a jump wire off the hot side of the battery and listen for a click. If there isn't a click than check where the wire goes into it for a break, I soldered mine back together. If it clicks check to see if you have power going to it when the key is on. Could be a dirty carb, vacuum lines leaking or not where they should be, bad points gap, timing...ect

Remove factory carburetor. Locate trash receptacle. Toss in factory carb. Put lid on trash receptacle. Put out on curb.

Get on ebay. Buy a real weber carb....the one made in spain...with the white choke housing...not black.

While it is in transit...google "yotatech weber install"

Prepare for install while you wait.

Pop on weber...enjoy years of trouble free driving.

He has a good point^, that what I would have done if I had the money and I didnt have to run my truck through DEQ. These carbs work great when they work, but when they start to go its better to throw them out or spend a lot of time reading and trying to understand how the hell it all works together.

I agree with Dave, but I have a couple of additions...
1) Do not throw the Aisin carb away, some poor sap living a state plagued by environmental nutjobs may need a carb to pass emissions. You shall make that poor sap even poorer by selling him your delinquent Aisin carb to help pay for your new Weber. FYI, I sold most of my factory emissions equipment and factory carb for over $350 - there is a market for that useless junk.

2) Somewhere in all those instructions, a few beers should be consumed...

I will most likely go that route since I do not have to deal with emissions. I just got to get the money first. Hopefully the old girl will hold out till then...
