Parking brake cable snapped

This morning. I do remember people bringing this up before...but I guess my search skills aren't great today.

It looks like it broke right at the firewall. I'm not seeing much online for my truck...Napa doesn't even show a listing for 1978 pickup brake cable. Neither does Rock Auto.

I'm assuming I could make a later model work...but because my camper is so low to the ground, I'm not as excited about sliding under there to really check things out as I was with my 4x4...basically when I'm on my back under my Chinook, my nose is brushing against the frame and stuff.

Anybody done this to their truck? Guessing it won't be too different for a 79-83 than my 78.

Red face

Can you say jack and jack stands??

The most important part is going to be where it goes onto the handle in the cab.

One most often needs to unbolt two bolts get the pin out remove the pulley thread the new cable in hook to handle .

Put the top back together and hook the bottom up .

That is off the top of my head users could very well be different

Not with the Chinook I can't! This thing is so heavy and wide it just doesn't work for me. Especially since I currently on the road and that would be very conspicuous in the parking lot of some store...I need to be more stealth than that. And I don't have jackstands with me anyways.

I plan to get the old one off tomorrow or the next day, then at least I'll have something to compare a new one to. Though it sounds like pretty much any store will have to order one, so I probably won't be able to compare side by side since they won't have it on hand.

I'll get mine off and see what's what, then probably just go with the next year that a shop had available.

Thanks.

Same thing happened to me and I could not find one anywhere to save my life! Best bet would be junk yard or to get an oem one from toyota...

Yeah, I thought of that too. Junkyard...seems like they'd be in no better shape than mine was. And Toyota no longer carries them.

So my best bet is a later model cable and hope it works...

It appears a 79 will work as well, as long as the Heavy suspension is selected.

Part number 46410-35151 $45.66 retail, $33.49 through an online dealer (above)

Well I ordered that one. I'll let you know how it works. I tried Napa again but he showed the part wasn't available through any of his distributers.

Two problems with the Toyota site...they don't know who the carrier will be for shipping until it ships. I'm on the road, which means I need it shipped "general delivery". But unless it's USPS shipping, you kind of need more than "general delivery" for the first line of the address...FedEx and UPS want a physical address of one of their local locations. So I had to just address it "general delivery", then I've got to start making calls once it ships to put a flag on it so it doesn't get rejected and sent back...

And it didn't tell me till after I ordered that it could take 3-5 days to ship! I just addressed it to a town a little ways down the road, since Napa and places like that typically get parts I order within 1-3 days.

Not a huge deal, just means I'm stuck where I'm at for a few more days than I planned.

No biggie, I'm on no time schedule. But I am impatient...

Well, negative on toyota motor parts. They will only ship to an address verified on my billing method. So there's no way to deliver to a town I don't live in.

If they have it, a dealership ought to be able to get it though...so I'll try that. Again.

Don't you how some make a mountain out of a mole hill...

Dealers may have to order it in, but it usually only takes a couple of days.

LOKAR has all types of brake cables, adapters, etc. Go to their WEB site and / or call them. They can do custom products as well. I use their products on my street rods, custom, and my Toyota truck.

Most likely it broke right at the slug where it goes into the handle. A friend of mine made one out of a steel rod and drilled a hole thru it and fed the broken piece thru the rod that was similar in size. For got how he got the wire to stay in. A small crimp would work. A machine shop could whip something out like that in no time and for cheap I would think. It might get you out of your bind. It might be a Bubba fix, might could get a lead fishing sinker to work til you can get to where a cable could be delivered.

Oh, I don't know that I'm really overreacting...

But yes, there is always a solution. I haven't given up yet!

I will call the dealership today, and look into some of the other suggestions if that doesn't pan out. The last dealership I called said it was a discontinued part, but he must not have known what he was talking about. I've got a part number now...

Just needed to wait until I was sure the other order was cancelled.

We'll just call that venting, not making a mountain out of a molehill.

But if you ever break something when you're over 1,000 miles from home, and find that most places tell you it's discontinued, then you find a place that has one, and they won't ship it because the address you need it shipped to is not your home address...and all the while you're without a parking brake, which in a motorhome that I'm parking up on leveling blocks is very important, not to mention any time I get out to check something out really quick and don't want to shut off the engine...

And every time something falls through I need to look at a map and decide where the next major town I'll be passing through is and find an business and address that will accept it for me...Annoying!

But yes...the way to treat a problem is to solve it, not to get frustrated about it or freak out about it.

Ok now I'm done venting.

Hopefully the dealership in Las Cruces has more brains than the Santa Fe one...

Ok hopefully this works.

Part number helped, so thanks for finding that for me.

I think the issue is that there was a change in mid-78 with the pickups, because I remember now that every time I'd get a part from my home dealership, they'd ask if it was pre-or post July 78, or something like that.

Probably the guy in Santa Fe was looking at pre July. My truck (luckily, apparently) is post July, which means it has more parts in common with later model pickups.

Anyway, the guy in Las Cruces said his system shows 9 of these still in existence. At least through Toyota parts dealers. Not sure about suncomb's people.

Hopefully they have it on Monday. Which means I've got a few days to camp and maybe check out the hot springs in Truth or Consequences! If it cools down enough at night...

If that doesn't work, I'm sure a member on here who is not too far from you could have it delivered at their adress.

go look at my build. I may have the cable you need. I ran in to a dilemma because I put a SFA horsecollar xmember on an IFS frame with SFA cab mounts and a 79 cab w/ an IFS rear axle so the pre 86 cable I have won't work with my setup and the 86+ won't work either

and there are pix in my build of the hilux cable i have

I was talking about Toyota making a mountain out of a mole hill, not you. Sorry about the confusion.

Oh! Well I'll admit I was getting a little frustrated, too.

Yeah...they the toyota parts site will only deliver to an address attached to your method of payment, nowhere else.

And if you pick the "best regular shipping" or whatever they call it, they cannot tell you which carried will be delivering the package until it's been shipped. Too bad...

But the dealership, when handed the part number by me (thanks for that), got it just fine. I did have to pre-pay, but I'm used to that at the dealership.

Thanks everyone! If for some reason this part falls through, I'll let you know. It comes into Las Cruces Monday around noon, and I'm making way there slowly now.
