I installed my new ENGNBLDR Crawler 261* cam this morning and now after I rev up the engine it makes a loud poping noise. But it only makes the noise when you hit the gas fast, it sounds fine if you gradually accelerate. Also the truck doesn't rev up as fast and it seems like it has less power. So idk, any ideas?

did u do the cam break in? the 'beat the hell out of it' procedure?

I think new cam break-in proceedure is to run at 2500 or so rpm's for like 15 minutes.

The popping could be that you need to re-adjust your valves or maybe timing because the lobes on the new cam are probably different than what was in there before?

 

Okay, so I took off down the road and went about two miles down a dirt road, and all of a sudden that sum beech started knocking like hell. So I called my buddy to tow me home. I got home tore it back down and I found the camshaft spun a bearing. So now... When I order camshaft bearings do they come three to a pack, or just one?

there is no "replaceable" bearings there, just the cap and head. I'm not positive but if that is junk then your head casting is junk. id ask a machine shop first but I'm pretty sure.

did you use assembly lube and torque to spec??

 

I used oil and torqued everything to spec

 

well the first problem sounds like cam timing was off i did that once on my 79 it idled real smooth rev'ed ok but once drivin it, it popped had no power, rechecked it and it was a tooth off so a quick fix and ran great. but i dunno man usually a cam wont cause any knocking, id be worried. oh and next time assembly lube, tons of it. it works much better than oil.

i suppose if its a good head, and you want to save it you can do that ^^.

 

what they do is cut a little off the bottom of the cap and then line hone it back in line. i just put mine in today also and it runs great. i used gear oil for my lube and also it says to set you valves at .007 intake, .009 exhust.run it till it gets hot and recheek your valves and also retork you head studs. head studs are 56foot pounds and the caps are 12-16foot pounds.

 

dude you are the man!!!!!!!!!!! I rather buy those anyday than spend $300 on a new head.

How much do you think the machine shop will charge to bore out the journals? they charged me $40 to shave the head.

 

I'm not sure.. Ive never had it done before. id think under or around $100
