Post your gas mileage 1st Gen Truck (79-83 ONLY!!)
#121
I drove this truck from Pheonix in January. Kept records for fuelly. I am averaging a little over 22 mpg so far. When I fix the ignition problem (coil is next on the list), I'll begin long term records!
Here's the Fuelly record (I hope this works)

TPD, the factory carb isn't the most efficient carb in the world. I'd recommend going to a weber if you can. If smog regulations are keeping you from doing that then I would make sure that your smog system is running up to par. I had about 130k on my truck when I desmogged it and when I took the EGR equipment off it was completely clogged and 100% worthless for what it was supposed to do.
A thorough tune up couldn't hurt either. Oil change, lube, filters (fuel and air), spark plugs, wires, etc. None of those are huge fuel robbers, but if they are all performing at a sub-par level then it could really add up. I just replaced my u-joints last week and I've already seen a 1 mpg increase in fuel efficiency. (my old ones were shot, I'm surprised they hadn't shattered already!)
Just check the truck over and make appropriate adjustments.

'82 Trailblazer (variant of a 4x4 SR5 longbed), brand new 22R with RV cam and valvesprings, rebuilt (still working out the kinks) stock carb, original exhaust, cleaned up and reused (soon to be removed) smog stuffz, 33x12.5x15, unknown/probably factory gearing.
I got 24 miles to the gallon on it's initial trip from Atlanta to Charlotte. Haven't determined city driving yet
getting ready to do it's 500 mile tune up!

82 2wd 20/22r hybrid still in the first 500 miles 122 jet in the primary slot 12mpg changed it back to the factory 108 20-30mpg after today's 200 mile drive mostly around 60mph but some 70-75mph drive...I love it. 203 miles and somewhere around 7 gallons of gas....

Full disclosure... this old truck is at 229k miles (the odometer has that extra digit), and it does leak oil from somewhere in the front of the engine, so on top of 22+ mpg, it uses about a half quart per 1000 miles highway. Could be a quick fix, but it certainly starts easily, and runs great. Dam good for the age and miles (everything is OEM).

I get 36-41 on average... in my Corolla.
My first gen averages 18 with stock tires and stock 4.11s. I did get as high as 36 MPG one time, that was a looooooong stretch of downhill from the Sierras.
Gas mileage was closer to the low-to-mid twenties on average until the compression went to poop. Most of my driving is done on country roads, seldom going faster than 55-60.

You know the float level can really make a difference in this department more than the idle mixture. I went from getting 12 - 16 mpg on my first 1980 to getting about 20 - 25 after rebuilding the carb and setting the float level down a bit. I had wired in a switch to the idle circuit cut solenoid too so if I had a long trip to go I would cut the idle circuit out. Never had any knocking doing this and I could average 28 on the highway (5th gear, 65 mph gentle driving).
Otherwise, the only idle-related switch I know of is the idle cut solenoid, which I wouldn't want to screw with!

I have a stock '83 4x4 with approximately original size tires. On a trip from Weed, CA to exit 216 off I-5 in Oregon, which involves a lot of climbing through the mountains, I went 266 miles on 13.11 gallons going 65-70 most of the way.
20 mpg
Incidentally, a few years ago I drove across the country in an '84 Celica GT-S I had with a 22RE and a 5-spd. Going 70-80 with the AC on constantly in the middle of summer I still got 27-29 mpg. Awesome car.

1980 20R = 25 mpg
I have 1980 SR5 pickup w/ the 20R motor, complete stock 2wd. I just bought it last week and drove it home from Raligh NC to Deland FL (600 miles) and I got 24.9 mpg.
