1979 Short Bed 4 speed.
360k miles, 215 70 14 tires and a lead foot and I get a consistent 15-17. completely stock in need of a tune up. I would do better if I kept my speed at 55-60 instead of 65-70/

Note: after a tune up I have only noticed a marginal improvement.

Stock, with 30's and a shell, about 17 or so around town, and 19-20 highway. Down to 14 if I use low range a lot.

81 22r with weber. I got 17-19 with 235 75 15's. Now has 32x11.50's and getting 15-17 .Mostly highway. I'll be installing 5.29's soon but I don't expect much improvement. I do have a shell with ladders on it, not helping.

I get 21-22 mpg highway running 305/65/17s (check mileage by gps) and still only get 200 miles to a tank of gas.

1983 Bone Stock, poorly tuned, 31's, I'm getting about 14 combined MPG. Weber swap and some other things should help, though.

Okay so I have an 83 sr5 long bed. I have a weber 3236, tube header, 2 1/4 exhaust, 20r head, e3, plugs, new Plug wires, and new bearings. The problem is I'm getting only 10-11 mpg with 30" tires and I just got new 31's this doesn't seem right to me. I don't do much highway thouh mainly short trips but it still seems bad.

I kept the mileage religiously for the first 4-5 years of ownership, every fill-up. The worst I ever got was 18.9, the best was 21.2. That was totally stock, including driving 90-100 miles to 4wheel for the day (or overnight) and back. Now I have 31/10.50s, 4:56gears, same stock motor, and I get 19, whether long trips or short.

Consistantly 21mpg if.....

....if I keep it between 60-65. 65-70 it drops down to 18.5-19mpg. This is with 235/75/15's. 31's was getting me garbage mileage.

1982 4x4 Short Bed
stock rebuilt carb
75k on rebuilt 22r

Hi everyone! First post by a first-time Toyota owner. My wife and I just bought a 1980 2WD with 133,000 original miles. It was owned most of its life by a mechanic, who changed out the transmission to the 5 speed from (I'm guessing) a later-model truck. Other than that, it appears to be stock, though I know almost nothing about these trucks and my mechanical knowledge is pretty basic. It also is likely in need of a basic tune-up. I love the truck, and everyone who's seen me in it says it fits me much better than my old compact sedan. However, after one fill-up of 75/25 highway/in-town driving, I got about 16 miles to the gallon. Anyone have any tips on ways I can improve on this? I'm looking for fast, short-term, cheap things I can do myself (I've changed my own oil and spark plugs, for example) as well as long-term, higher-investment tips (like rebuilding or replacing my carb, whether by a mechanic or with a friend who's a mechanic).

She's a sweet truck named Church (I didn't name her). You all seem like great people - thanks in advance for any help you all can give!

Truck has a 5 digit odometer, hard to verify (unless certified) that the mileage is actually 133K, could be 233K etc...
Try doing a compression check etc, tune up.
truck could have a tired engine in it..

A fair point! However, the mechanic who owned it kept meticulous records, including every smog check. I can see where it rolled over and it's only done it once, so I'm mostly certain it's only 133K.

I'll bring it in for a tune-up next week and have them run a compression check. I've heard something about performance exhaust systems helping; anyone know anything about that? Also, any more ideas?

Thanks so much for the ideas and the welcome!

I've been getting 17 combined city-highway driving and up to 20 on just the highway, but I should be getting a bit more... I still have a few kinks to work out.

1983 bone stock SR5 4WD

Something tells me I should be getting better mileage, but here's what I got:
'83 49 state SR5 long bed 4WD with 110K on the odo, 225/75/15 tires and stock gears. In mixed driving, with highway speeds of 55-60, I'm getting just about 17 mpg. Seems low to me especially considering I'm a very conservative driver. Other than being cold blooded, it seems to run fine. What do you guys think?

TPD, the factory carb isn't the most efficient carb in the world. I'd recommend going to a weber if you can. If smog regulations are keeping you from doing that then I would make sure that your smog system is running up to par. I had about 130k on my truck when I desmogged it and when I took the EGR equipment off it was completely clogged and 100% worthless for what it was supposed to do.

A thorough tune up couldn't hurt either. Oil change, lube, filters (fuel and air), spark plugs, wires, etc. None of those are huge fuel robbers, but if they are all performing at a sub-par level then it could really add up. I just replaced my u-joints last week and I've already seen a 1 mpg increase in fuel efficiency. (my old ones were shot, I'm surprised they hadn't shattered already!)

Just check the truck over and make appropriate adjustments.
