The Colorado will probably see its 36th birthday recycled into something different.

These trucks were designed with different purposes in mind. The Toyota was designed for harsh conditions all over the world with a great 4 Wheel Drive system. Reliability, longevity, and simplicity is key here. The Chevy was designed for family trips to the hardware store.

Having spent a lot of time on a camper trailer forum, I've been beaten into submission on other trucks. There are a lot of really good reasons to buy something other than Toyota. I clearly still have a huge Toyota bias, but the truth is, there are different trucks for different purposes. None match the overall quality of Toyota, but with the newest Toyotas and newest domestics...the gap is closing.

Toyotas fall short in the towing world. Not from towing capacity, but payload limit.

Anyway, I agree! There's nothing that'll match these old Toyotas.

That Colorado was definitely not built for off road. Intentionally. It's not the point with that truck. And as I've been reminded by retired people with their domestic trucks to pull their trailers...Fords and Chevys, to generalize, appeal to people looking for work trucks and payload/towing capacity. Toyotas appeal more to younger guys who like to offroad. That's a very general statement and doesn't come close to covering all the different people and views, but in general, I have to admit it's true.

 

In other news, with all the work trucks that were Chevy that I've driven for field jobs, that front lower cowl is the first thing to get torn off on dirt roads. That helps the approach angle quite a bit

Some people are not able to appreciate the finer things in life. What size tires and wheels are you running on your truck? I currently have 33" BFG and they seem to big, thus I'm thinking about selling them and going to some 31" BFG tires.

 

I like nothing about that Chevy.
Now, if they put it through the same trials Top Gear did to that80's Hilux I'd like to see that - LOL!

So you mean that the nicely-proportioned lift / wheel-well clearance on the first-gen is stock? I've always liked it and describe it as "sexy without trying".

 

Sorry I forgot about the lift. I'm not sure that I like the way it sits so I'm thinking of going back to the stock height. The steering drag link is oem, the picture is a bit deceiving representing the actual height of the truck. I still carry the factory spare tire which I believe is a 29" tire.

 

My truck has the stock chrome wheels with 31" tires.
