I recently bought an 81 toyota pickup since i bought the truck i put a clutch in it and it runs great. I do have a couple problems tho first is a carb issue (big suprise) the truck wont crank unless i pour gas down the carb but once its running its good, the fuel filters are good and so is the pump i think it has lost its prime so any advice on how to fix this is appreciated. the other problem i have is the heater going into decmber this is a neccesity the blower motor works but the air is not warm, could it be a heater core issue? an help with these problems would be great thanks.

let me say first welcome to yotatech (although who the heck am I?)

anyway .. I would suspect the first thing to do is actually rebuild the carb .. I dont know the history ? .. but if it is original 25+ years old , its time . Second , heat .. depending on your driving conditions ? these 4cyl engines , and expecially the heater wern't known for "megga" heat .. highway driving may require a piece of cardboard in the front (winter front) as the cold "wind" will cool everything way more so in a 4Cyl then a V8 . City driving might be a # of things , rad , heater core , water pump , thermostat ... you get the idea ... I would first take some actual temps with a thermometer in the ducting area , and go from there ...

thanks i will start in on it this week. i have heard the 22r carbs are very hard to rebuild is this true? and where could i geta good rebuild kit?

Umm my heater in my toyota blows harder and hotter than most cars and trucks out there.. I can't even keep my heater on the lowest setting without burning my face off.. So maybe something is wrong with your heater..

I had a similar carb issue and sfter pricing a rebuild, I ended up going with a Weber 36DGEV. Best investment I put into my engine. Isn't there a heater valve that opens up the hot water to the core on that model. I mean, most cars and truck relied on a cable operated valve in line on the heater hose didn't they? Passenger side fender well? Maybe it's not functioning. Just guessing.

Low coolant level can chill your heater. It's an easy check and fix if you haven't already done so.

hahaha ... " So maybe something is wrong with your heater " maybe it's the rocket fuel nerfinator ... I check that first !!

yea i have looked at the webbers but they are a little pricey but that may be the way i go i just wasant sure if the factory carb was worth a rebuild. And the heater may have a vavle to be honest im fresh out of the chevy world so im not an expert but i will look into it . is the heater core pretty easy to get to? just out of curiosity

as seen , it's on the bottom of the heater INSIDE the box ... so you have to remove the box .. I think the "book time" is 8-10 HRS RE&RE ..

I just looked at the heater control vavle and it looks like its had a trip to hell and back so ill start with that lol. And my carb building skills well lets just say im still learning, but i did find a full weber kit for 250 so im thinkin on it. i appreciate all the help guys

Yea I got a rebuilt done on my old '82 4x4.. Not worth it, again unless the guy really knows what he's doing... My '83 has a weber and she purs like a kitten.. good luck..

I opted to rebuild mine using the supposedly better Napa kit...Waste of money! I was starting to think maybe it wasn't the carb since I rebuilt the original just like the instructions said. I ended up buying a Weber (Redline-made in Spain, not the weber of North America)32/36 on ebay for $270 shipped. Problem solved, and I still haven't "tuned" it like some of the others say cuz it runs just fine. If you can afford it, just buy the Weber and save yourself the hassle, trust me I did both. And install is not bad at all.

yea i just sold my soul for a set of mud terrains lol but that will difinatly be the route i go when pay day comes, i guess i can deal with for now. like i say once shes warmed up she runs like a champ but thanks guys
