it has never come apart but the most the shackle has opend up is about 10" this setup does require some tweeking with limit straps and some sort of anti kickback on the shackles. i have just purchased some johnny joints to do a link set on the rear.

monsterman,
you have any pictures of cutting the cab and welding the box to the cab? i would be very interested in some of the finer details of that part of the build.

I just bought an 82 long bed 4sp man. I will try to get some pics up soon, overall it is in pretty good shape, needs some work though. It is my new project. First thing is to return it to stock height or lift it as the guy I got it from lowered it(I still do not understand the point in that). Any tips or suggestions on what I should do? This will mostly be a daily driver in Chicago but I will occasionally get it offroad and go muddin.

budddavid- My suggestion would be to change all the fluids. Engine Oil, tranny fluid, diff. fluid, flush coolant, etc. You can never tell when, or in my case, if the PO changed the fluids.

Since you are in ChicaGo please take it over to Adam at http://4xinnovations.com so he could take some measurements and start making us some front/rear bumpers. He is in Wisconsin but claims all the first gens in the area have rusted away..

Since the PO lowered it does it still have the front driveshaft? Post up some pictures when you get the chance.
If you are planning a lot of work on it I would suggest that you try to get a Toyota Factory Service Manual. They have got a ton more info than you will ever find in a Haynes or Chiltons

Yeah I already had planned to change all the fluids and do a good tune-up and brake job. I also need to replace the master cylinder. I will gladly run up to WI to have some measurements taken for all of you, I am in the market for some bumpers anyway. Hell maybe I will get a deal out of it. Oh and it is a 4x2 so there is no front drive shaft, I am thinking about converting it to 4x4 though if I can get a good deal on all the needed parts.
