help I.D. my transmission? (pics)

I bought this transmission used and it was clamed to be an L52. I want to confirm but cannot find any markings or labels?

Also, I see alot of engine swaps on these trucks, how much power can the L52 handle (whp/torque)? I dont want to do upgrades and then have to blow up my trans. thanks

Most people would be keeping the 22R and upgrading the transmission, or do both. I don't know at what point you've got too much torque for the the L52 (or 50), but it's definitely a much weaker transmission than any of the later model trannies.

well , after further research, I think it is an L52...but that same new research has revealed that I am in need of an L50 more than likely. differant input shaft size? I dont even know what that is honestly.

I had this crazy idea of mating a Subaru Sti Engine with the transmission/transfer case. I am very familiar with rebuilding Subies and working on them, more than this motor.

This truck will not be a "crawler". I want it to go play in the sand dunes (no jumping) and still be a weekend driver. I have it licensed in a county that doesnt have smog regulations so that isnt a bother. It starts and runs "fine". Has LCE long headers, stock head, Offy intake with the smaller Weber carb. 3" suspension lift on 31's now. wanna go to 33's or 35's. I also want to keep the stock air conditioning and power steering that I recently took off my doner 1980 pickup. ...

Ideas?

Easy way to eliminate an L45 is to try to find 5th gear

No kidding!

He knows it's either an L50 or L52, so looking at identical images of 45, 50 and 52s won't do much good...but yeah, if he just bought a tranny and the guy said "it's a Toyota tranny" and that's all he knew, those Marlin pictures would narrow it down. As it was, it was already narrowed down in his first post.



The input shaft is that shaft coming out of the center of the bellhousing. Yeah, I don't know what you're going to need to do to get it to mate up to a Subaru engine. I understand wanting to stick with something you know. These 22Rs are more simple than Subaru engines, though...just a thought.

my bad, didnt see the first part of the post originally- think the boxer motor would be pretty cool, but as far as worth while that would be personal decision- the yota motors are pretty simple and tough..

I only know EA82's. Good engines, I have one in my Subaru, but I wouldn't trade my 22R for it, that's for sure. They leak, and they're even louder than a 22R once they start getting old. I do like the SPFI...but I'd still take my carbed Toy engine. Only one head, too! And everything within reach. Although, with all the space under my truck, the Suby engine would be easier to work on...one reason they seem so cramped to me is because it's not so easy to get under them, since they're in cars.

That's what my G series looks like in my 87. lol. I think that one is in better condition actually. I got more mud caked on mine then that.

well after going back and looking up the emails I had way back when I bought this transmission, I confirmed that the seller of it claimed that it was an L52. With that being said, I now have 2 questions. I have read on here that the L52 was exclusive to 1983 trucks. Mine is a 1982. So, without major re-machining, is there a way to put this trans into my '82 with the 22r?

2nd question is more of a repeated question from my origianl post, how much torque/hp can the L52 take? I know people have added turbos and superchargers to the 22r before, but havent heard how the trans reacted.

Here is my altered plan with what is availible.

If possible, I would like to pop in the L52 so I have 5th gear for freeway driving. I did read all the responses and threads involving swapping out the trans for the w56 due to stregth and reliability. I now have 4 speed transmissions and 1 L52 and a spare 20r engine sitting in my yard and do not have the w56. I will begin the big engine swap project, hopefully, this coming spring. I have not decided on whether to go the path that many have already traveled with the turbo'd 3rz swap or the path yet to be blazed with the Subaru STI 2.57 liter turbo set up. If I do the Subaru route, I am still undecided how to deliver the power to the wheels. Either with a one-off adapter to the yota trans and transfer case for 4wd or the route of using the STI trans and leaving it awd and getting rid of the transfer case all together. I already accept the fact that custom drive shaft and all that will be required but I want is sick and unique.

This is way beyond my fabbin skills an know how... but if you could do the hole sti set up wit the 6speed an the dccd in the truck. that would be pretty bad ass... how that would work for off road use on a truck would be interesting... You would think everythin would hold up an work right... ? Throw some lockers in there too.........

Well, depending on what year sti I find to do the transplant, it would be for sand and street use. To be honest, I don't even know what lockers are. I don't do off roading. The dccd is fully adjustable in the sti so I would need to do custom drive shafts and rear dif swap as well. Looking into 31 inch sand paddles all around for the dunes and 33's for street.
