bed length

I have a 1983 toyota pickup and it is long bed. The bed that is on it is really rusty and i am not going to waste my time trying to bob it. So i was going to get a new bed but wondered what the length difference between long bed and short bed are, because i might bob the frame and get a short bed instead. I searched all over the internet and can't find the lengths of them.

My short bed is a little over 6' from the inside of the front to the inside of the tailgate.

The issue you will run into is that the added length in a long bed is between the rear wheel wells and the front of the bed, i.e. the added frame length of 9" is in the wheelbase. So the rear part of the bed that one normally cuts off in a bed bob is the same.

I changed mine from a long to a short. I took 8 1/2" out behind the cab. 8 harbor freight jack stands and 1 weekend. Lots of measuring. If you do it make sure to plate both sides of the cut area. One advantage is that the extra length of the brake line allows you to eliminate the lpsv, just go straight to the rear line.

If you haven't done your front and rear hangers, steering box, etc, now is the time to get a short frame. It's a lot easier to do it upside down, off the truck. I have plenty of detailed pictures showing where I put the box if anyone needs them.
