engine id questions
I guess this should be an intro as well....
Not my first toyota but I always wanted a first generation.
now I have one body is in good shape, but the engine needs a new timing chain. I'll post pics as soon as possible.
I just purchased a '81 toyota pick-up I have a bad timing chain cover. I don't believe that it is the original engine. It is my understanding that the '81 motor had a dual row timing chain and the more rounded valve cover. This is not the case with my motor and I don't want to order the wrong parts. I have a carbed, single row timing chain, and square style valve cover. The serial number on the motor is 1788881. can you use this number to reference what year it is so I can get the correct kits to swap in a new timing chain and head gasket? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
thanks in advance!!!

I guess that I was under the impression that they were all fuel injected after '85. Is this out of a truck? or what?
I do have the pear shaped ports on the head. I'm just puzzled because there was no mention from the previous owner...about an engine swap.

people blow a headgasket on a 22r and just throw it in the gutter and swap in a new one... so even the PO might not have known.

yeah I suppose so..
I have never owned a pre '84 toyota. I looked in the engine compartment and saw a carbed 22r, the valve cover didn't send up any red flags...it wasn't till I saw a single row timing chain that I realized that something was up.
Any way to tell what this might have come out of?
The Block does say 22r on the smaller boss next to the serial.
