81 tranny issue

I recently purchased an 81 pickup, 35" bfg's, 4" lift ect from a friend of mine it had a blown 22r and he had dismantled it and had been sitting for about 6 years so i hauled it home got a 20r out of the junk yard threw it in, the motor runs like a top anyways i was driving it around and i noticed that when i went to put it into reverse it grinds like i am not pushing in the clutch all the way (new clutch and slave) anyway could it be out of adjustment even tho i dont think there is one or possibly a new master cyl ??

Does it just grind a bit and then go into reverse, or does it just grind? My Toyota's have always made a little noise going into reverse.

cycle the clutch a couple times, then put it into a forward gear, then in reverse, that gets rid of the grinding.

The 4 speeds were strong than the 5 speeds from that era, so at least you've got that going for you.

reverse is not synchro'd, so you have to wait a few seconds after coming to a complete stop with the clutch in to shift into reverse.

all my yotas have always grinded or clunked into reverse... i believe it is a straight cut gear so it wont go in the greatest ever time..but like Swansen said..throw her in 1st then hit reverse!
