'79 4x4 turbo diesel

I thought i would share some pictures of my truck with you all.
it's a '79 short box 4x4 originally a 20r 4 speed, I replaced every piece of sheet metal on it, and then ran it with a 22r 5 speed until i sold it to a good friend who did the diesel conversion. only to end up selling it back to me afterwords.
here's the original thread
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f114...rt-bed-153008/

the engine is a 2.4L 2Lt out of an 86 4x4 bolted to a W56 5 speed. the donor truck was bought for $800. it ran great but gave a new meaning to rust bucket. the cab was only attached with one mount, and bounced when it was driven around.

it has about the same power as a 22r but a little more when you get into the boost, it even sounds the same as the 22r... well except the turbo whistle

and the best part is i'm reaching 30mpg with it.

anyone else out there have a diesel 1st gen? VW or Mercedes swaps? i would love to see some other swaps.

Parts are not too bad If you dont mind going to the dealer. And at the dealer they have everything down to every seal available.

Out of curiosity...I don't know much, but I would figure a diesel would be too strong for a regular Toy tranny and axles/diffs. Not the case?

2.4 liter 2LT Turbo Diesel

Horse Power: 86 @ 4000
Torque Output: 139 ft/lbs @ 2200

Thats lower HP then a carb'd 22r and around the same amount of torque maybe slightly higher but not by mucch.

very nice, like the 30mpg

If I could do the diesel swap, with my aux tank would give me about a 900 mile range

The engine defiantly cane from an 86 4x4. It was exactly what the VIN on the donor called up. Somebody painted the valve cover red at sone point though, along with other things like the transmission. What makes you think it was jdm?

Awesome ride. My plan, even though it will take a good year or two at least, is to put a vw tdi into a first gen(1981), which I'm buying tomorrow.

Thanks for the compliments. The truck is off the road right now dealing with windshield rust. Afterwords it will be getting new body panels and a paint job. Since the pictures it is now intercooled
