I keep looking at the 3b in my BJ42
and thinking ... yeah ... that'll fit in the pickup! I think it would. It is a dead reliable solid engine too. The BJ gets 25-30 mpg (with turbo and tweaks) so I would expect the truck to do at least as well. I keep waiting for the 20r to die so I have an excuse to do it ... it won't die.

then my wife will kill me and I still won't get a 3B in there. Actually, the truck is hers and she is happy with the 20/22R. Then, the BJ42 is hers too and she loves that tractor sound ... so perhaps I'll get my chance yet.

still working on mine (non-turbo)
The cylinders looked great, so just the head...
All new valves, full gasket kit, and going back together. Here is the head, back in place. Head bolt threads chased, head surface cleaned.
So I disassembled the injectors. They just needed cleaning. Here they are, back in (lubed with diesel!!).
So I cleaned the piss out of the injector fuel supply tubes, the intake manifold, the glow plug harness (plate steel!), and assembled the complete intake system. Then connected a hanging fuel tank over the engine, and primed the system. The priming pump is EASY to use, and worked great. Fuel came out the return outlet on the injector supply line, I reconnected it to the fuel pump return and then installed the exhaust manifold. The crank is hard to turn even slowly (it wheezed! compression!...see the ratchet on the crank?), and you can see the tube connecting the alternative fuel supply for priming, and I'll leave it there for first start! Once it starts and runs, I'll restore the fuel tank connection. Can't wait.
New timing belt, water pump, timing belt tensioner too. Valve adjustment was a snap. All going smoothly. I think the priming will make this an instant start. I just need more time to work on it!!!
These old diesels are SO easy to work on. I took NO PICTURES while taking it apart, and it is STILL easy to put together!!
By the way... this is a separate project from my '83 SR5 (avatar). It is an '82 2.2 L with about 169k miles. 2WD. I dream of transplanting it into the SR5.
