i just went and bought my 4th toyota. i saw this ad online and couldnt pass it up. $500, and it came with a camper and lots of parts

its a '79 short box 4x4 thats pretty much all stock. the 20r was swapped for a 22r from an 83 some years ago, and also some body work was done at the same time.

the trucks got a fair bit of rust, the box will need a lot of work, or a replacement, and the cab needs some floor work, but is not horrible, and i may just replace the doors if i can find some cheap. and best of all the frame is perfect, which generally doesnt happen around here.

the trucks sat for a year, and hasnt been run in a few months but fired up really good and runs very smooth

only problem is either the trans or t-case is shot, reverse works fine and it will drive forward slowy, however if you try and give it gas somthing skips and it jumps like you were on and off the clutch.

its a chain driven case so im thinking that the chain is skipping. i can get a 5-speed and a tcase from and 84 for $150

My wife would have killed me but for $500 I would have brought the truck home too. I think you got an awesome deal. from what I could see of the Dash it looks to be in awesome shape.
The baggie by the fuse box makes me think your windshield might be leaking around the lower left corner. Mine was leaking there and I had water coming in by the fuse box, obviously not a good thing to have

The truck should have a gear driven transfer case unless someone converted to a later case, maybe when they did the 22R

Good luck with in and keep use posted on what you find...I know you will have a couple of surprises as you go through it...mine was three layers of carpeting in the cab (makes for a crappy spronge and let to my rusty floor)

Oh and PM 'Island Yota' He lives on Vancouver Island...maybe has an idea on a TC or transmission...

yea not too sure about the t-case, i was going by what the previous owners friend said. i think it may also be the transmission. its hard to find gears in. i havent had much time to play with it, im not picking it up until next weeknd

Great find gsb, a little work and you could have a show winner there.
If it's ok in reverse but won't take a lot of thrust in first it could be the tranny maybe the gears are chipped. If it was the t-case reverse would probably be giving you trouble too. For parts there is a wrecker in a Van. suburb that seems to have a good selection of older trucks/parts, I think it was minitruck something or other... We have a bunch of members out that way... CoedNaked, weasy2k, to name a few...

Yes, but there is a whole bunch of ancillary stuff that needs to be changed to make it work. Marlin sells a complete kit, including shifter, for about $150 to adapt an L52.

BTW, sell that camper, and you might be able to pay for the whole truck.

yea i saw the ad on usedvic. i just sold the camper for 200 bucks, i'm now down to $300. also i put insurance on it today and brought it home. the trans made some bad noises in first gear but never seemed to skip liked the last owner described. the trans also got much better over the course of the day, putting about 100km on it. however it still does not always want to go into gear and the oil in the trans has a metallic tinge to it. for now i am going to drive it as is and worry about the tranny swap later

 

I do a fluid change on the tranny and transfer case and consider replacing the plugs with magnetic plugs (if they are'nt already). That might help and could be cheap ins. Also check with either a local heavy truck mech. or local airport aircraft mech. there are places that can do an analysis on your used fluid/oil that will give you an idea what's going on... the cost should only be about $20-30.

 

i changed the fluid today, lots of copper and lots of silver. not sure what exactly is wrong. it feels a lot better now though. although it still makes a back clunking noise starting in 1st

 

island4x4.com and blackflag4x4.com are local boards, jjamieson on Island4x4 parts out alot of First gen's and he sells at really good prices, lives in Langford. I have a complete 5spd tranny and gear driven t-case but have no idea on what condition it is so I wouldnt feel right selling it without trying it first. I also have quite a few parts that just wont sell that id be willing to give away, all good stuff.

 

The copper is from worn syncros, the silver could be either the gears or a bearing. My guess would be that one or more of the bearings is worn out and the slop is causing the syncros to wear more and is also causing that clunk you hear coming into first as the slack is taken up when you let the clutch out.

 

yes!

you need the L52 clutch fork, clutch kid(pilot bearing, pressure plate, disk, throwout bearing) and the L52 throwout bearing hub and clips(you press the throwout bearing onto the hub and it slips onto the input bearing cover).

it bolts right up, but you will need to cut a new hole in the floor in the cab for the top-mounted shifter. by the way, make sure to get the shifter with the L52, the L43 goofy side-shifter won't cut it.
