1982 SBC Swap

1982 SBC Swap
Hello fellow Yota Owners,
I traded my 1999 Audi A4 that i was in the process of building for a 1982 Toyota with a blown motor and a 305 Small Block Chevy. It's got an unknown amount of lift, looks like all suspension which is a plus. It came with worn out 35x15.50x15 Super Swamper TSL-SX's and brand new black wagon wheels.

There she blows, getting ready for the swap. We pulled the old transmission and transfer case out, and with a little cutting of the cross member, we were one step closer!
I drove about an hour northeast of Martinsville to Gretna, VA. I picked up an SM-465 3-Speed with a Granny Low and a NP208c out of a 86 Chevrolet C20 with a 6.2L Diesel. All Chevy bellhousings matched in the 80's. We test fit the engine to see how we would mount up the radiator and fans. We're gonna run electric fans and a slim 2 core radiator, which is fine to cool a 305. The electric fan will keep it cool on the trail when moving slow.

We may have to do a little cutting on the front clip, but we still havent had a for-sure position on the engine just yet.
We then slid the transmission and transfer case under the truck. I don't have a picture of it, but the bellhousing hit the transmission tunnel before the transmission was about 1 or 2 feet from the ground, which will result in some cutting of the tunnel.

I traded the old 22R that was torn down because of a spun bearing with a friend of mine that has plenty of Chevy parts to get us finished. I got a Weber 4 Barrel carb from him, a radiator, fans, engine mounts, etc.

This weekend we plan to weld in the mounts and then figure out what we're gonna do about the transmission

Good luck on the build! I like the first gens. I have a 82 with 350 in it. I'm in the process of going through everything on it. Garage queen right now. I just did dual cases, re wired it, new exhaust, bigger electric fan with a shroud to keep cool while going slow, and am doing 1tons now.

I've got a small 4 core but I dont know if I have the room between the crank pulley and the front clip. Once we get it in there and bolted down we'll figure something about.

I have a th350 in mine. I didn't cut my floor except where it hit my 4wd shifters. I'm also running a 2 core 1 in core alum radiator and a 16" electric fan. I cut out my core and moved my radiator foreword then built a new core support with 1" square tube. I'm also using an alum short HV water pump.

I'll either use the 4 core if it passes the pressure test to ensure it's a good radiator, it's pretty old. Otherwise I'll get the Yota radiator back and see if I can run with that and throw a big electric on there. If all of that doesnt work I'll have to get a conversion one. What year is your engine?

Okay, mines an 85 so i think all chevy bell housings were the same in the mid 80's. Can you send me a picture of your engine bay, more specifically the bell housing and the front of the motor and clearance between the front clip.

Ok I'll get some pics as soon as I can to ya. Ya all the chevy bell housing are the same in the v8's and 4.3's up to the ls engines. In the 90's.

Okay thats what I thought. I might have positioned the tranny too far back which made the bellhousing sit in the incorrect position. I'll post some pictures this weekend. Thanks for the help thus far.

inline pump is easy to set up. you can even get an inline fuel filter to put under the hood, the screw on screw off type, like an oil filter. that stuff is pretty cheap really.
ya i love my old dodge for the lack of electronics, it's simple. although the stereo i put in it has bluetooth. makes my toyota look like a scum bag.
