Is there power steering off other years that will work on a 82? I will be only using the truck off road. Hard to crawl all day without power steering!

 

If you are looking to buy a new power steering box I would switch over to an IFS box and go with a cross over Hi-steer. Especially if you are going to do some crawling.

Most people use the IFS box of the 86-88 Pickups. You can get them for anywhere from $200 (refurbed) to $400 (new). Then a good Hi-Steer kit will set you back about $350 (with the IFS mount). Wab Fab makes a good one that I will eventually be going with:

I've driven a 1st gen with a Hi-Steer and it's like night and day between the stock push-pull on my truck! The only reason that I don't have one now is because I have a new born son so my plans have been slightly delayed.

 

oh, and a Hi-Steer system requires at least a 3" lift to clear the springs

Enough people have gone to high steer that there's gotta be a few first gen power steering boxes laying around for cheap. Still using mine. But I have been lusting after high steer for a few years myself.

Stock 80-83 ps boxes would work, later solid axle's might too, don't know.

 

Is it possible to use the power steering box from an 83 and still do a high steer setup. I have an 82 with an 83 power steering setup

Convert to high steer it is one of the best things you can do handlingwise..your existing power steering pump and hoses will work with an IFS p/s box..

 

With a four inch lift you are probably pushing the limits of the stock steering the box. The box you need for high steer will come off of an ifs truck or four runner. There are 2 versions both work fine. Will look like this when done:

 

Nice thanks for the pics, we have an 86 91 and 93 4x4 yotas at the pick n pull lot and its half off any part through monday. Would the 86 be the best year to get and will the other years work with the marlin crawler or wab fad frame mount kits

 

Ya they all work with the frame reinforcement kit you just have to cut off the old garbage and use a hole saw to make the holes in the frame. All the boxes will pretty much be the same, get the one that looks the best and if you can remove the pitman arm I think it's cheaper at pick and pull

So went to pick and pull today the 91 was missing the power steering
Box already and the 93 was 2wd. the 86 was 4x4 but the steering box only had one hose line input on top, is that correct??? Or was it a manual box? I thought it should have 2 line hookups on top? I didn't get it cuz I wasn't sure. I have until tomorrow to get it at half if that's the correct one

 

Should have two hoses, Input(supply) and output (return)
Some one may have swiped a line...

 

Thats what i thought i did a power steering conversion on my willys with a 4 bolt chevy box and it had input and output nipples. The box on the 86 only had one nipple on the top of the steering box there wasn't a second return line nipple it must have been manual is all I can think.
