Hey guys havent been on here in a while but wanted to thank you guys and gals for all the help and I did try out the octane booster and it still didnt help, I actually picked up another yota 88 actually and swap the fuel tank and carb over and what not but I got confused with the vacum lines. I attach two pics of how my vacum line is set up in my truck, please let me know if I got it mixed up. =(

Check your choke mechinism. If it is sticking shut, open the throttle first then make sure to open the top butterfly.I believe there is a vaccuum diaphram that operates the choke. Make sure the diaphram in in working order. Kev

DMOORE, scope this site out:

The diagram that you are looking for is in the FSM. I personally use the 1985 FSM which is pretty much the same for the 1st gen years for my 83 pickup.

I seen where you flushed lines, changed filters and so forth. Did you change the filter in the tank? Mine had a hard shell of varnish on the in tank filter. I may of missed your post but didnt see it when going thru your thread. There is a pic of it on my 83 build on page 7.
Part number for a new intank filter is #77023-12050. On ebay it is called a TOYOTA FACTORY NIB FUEL FILTER SUCTION TUBE DIESEL. It was selling for $4.50 when I finally found it. I paid $15 at Toyota.
Edited....Just seen this was an old thread, still I have found a few that didnt know there was a filter in these tanks.

Lots of useful stuff here, Thanks
When the new coil does not fix my stalling issue later this week (#!#@!*!), I will probably dig into the fuel system. I may be getting a vapor lock due to some blockage. It feels electrical -shuts off like a switch, after it warms up. It seems like it could be the coil, since I've replaced everything else in the ignition system except the key/ignition switch!
But the first thing I checked/replaced was the fuel filter outside of the tank, and fuel was freely spilling while I changed it. If there is blockage, it may be farther forward in the lines.
At 230k miles, and nearly 30 years, the fuel system is probably in need of cleaning.
I never would have suspected there's a filter at the fuel pickup in the tank!
Thanks!!

toyota carb switch
i have an 83 toyota 4x4 pickup and i am switching the carb from stock to a weber but im having issues figuring out what one to get. theres a few. the one on the truck is electric choke. i dont mind having a man choke but theres also the issue of cc of the motor. how do i figure out that. the number on the carb tag is 35291. it appears that a few of the weber carbs will work but i dont what to get the wrong one. help anyone on any of these questions please.

My truck kinda does the same surging thing. It is an 85' 22r and I have noticed that the gas tank builds up an enormous amount of pressure when the engine is not in use. I was wondering if pressure could cause a problem with the fuel system? And if I might need a new gas cap?

They will actually talk with you, and know what they're talking about. There's also a forum discount, I don't remember how to get it though. Check out Kaw's desmog thread for more details.

gas line being pinched
The gas line was pinched between the tank and fuel filter under the bed on my buddys truck after changing the fuel filter keeping it from from running at higher rpm but it was good cause we cleaned carb and grounds and it is idleing and running better then ever now and revs high rpms great

I had this problem last night like it was bogging down or misfiring and it turns out that it got vapor locked due to the gas cap being ttoo tight. I took the cap off and put it back on just snug. No problems after.

Was having a similar issue after I found a black plastic cap under the vehicle. Turns out the cap went on the EGR Vacuum Modulator. Cleaned the filter, put the cap back on, and all is well...for now. Still need to rebuild carb, and have fuel tank cleaned and sealed (38 years and counting!).
