The usual culprit is the input shaft bearing. Drive it till it drives you nuts enough to pull it out. Have a good spare handy or start reading up on the rebuilds etc. Marlin crawler actually has rebuilts for a reasonable price and they seem to have a good rep.

I for one am nuts about trans noises. Terry and I swapped my 87's trans cause a light howl in nuetral and a growl accelerating. Most would of ignored it. I know a noise means something is machining itself.

^^agreed; however, before you go yanking anything, you might want to check your gear oil level in your tranny. Low or no lube in the tranny can make a whiney, hollow sound in the transmission. It's worth a shot to potentially save you some time and money.

My neighbor's house is for sale, you can move in next door and we can crank it out. I'll take it easy on your back and just lay you down on a creeper to do all the work on the underside of the cab!

If I ever move...it will be straight to Colorado or Oregon or Wshington.

If I have to pack up all my crap and go through all that...I damn well better find some really cool place with mountains and rust free toyotas.
