1979 Limited Edition Model

I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a 1979 Toyota Limited Edition? I have one with a low VIN# and haven't seen one like it before.

When Toyota introduced the 4x4 truck in 1979 many dealers or Toyota sales regions put packages together to push sales such as the "Cowboy Special" with a Western theme and others, these were not factory packages. The "Black Package" was the first Toyota factory option package and continued through 1983. The "Mojave Limited Edition" in 1983was another factory package and almost all of these packages were 2 wheel drive. I have a 1983 Mojave Limited Edition-Black package 4x4. The truck was special ordered directly from Japan for me by my friend / owner of Englander Toyota located in Orlando, Florida. I have only heard of one other truck like mine and it was located in Canada. You will have to do your research to find out the details about your truck. Good luck and enjoy.

Not true, I have one of these pickups as well, with a factory badge showing a limited number production (mine is 123 out of 1089). From what I have been able to determine so far, one of these trucks were manufactured for every Toyota dealer in the US (1089 in 1979) as a showcase vehicle. As such, they had every option the factory offered at this time (A/C, tilt wheel, power steering, chrome grille, tach, carpeting, etc).

Here's my junk, please overlook the redneck-ness. I bought this truck when I was 16, drove it for 2 years, and then let it sit defunct at my folks house for 10 years while I made my way in the world, got married, etc. I have only begun restoring it to its former glory again in the past 3 weeks or so. Without further ado:

Just so happens I picked up a 79 "Limited Edition" 4x4 cab and bed for $150 to slap on my 80 frame on saturday. I don't have any decent pictures that show the badge or anything but if I remember to I'll put a pic on here once I get the body mounted.
The only special feature I've found so far is a tilting steering column.

They do exist.

I e-mailed the photos of the Limited Edition Badge to some friends at Toyota in Japan and they believe it was issued by the Toyota west coast sales region similar to the concept of the 1984-85 "Ivan Stewart" clone limited editions only available from the west coast sales region. According to the people at Toyota -Japan they have no record that this was a factory limited edition. I checked with friends at mid-atlantic and southeast Toyota sales regions and they had never seen these before. Still, you guys are really lucky to have these vehicles. I wish I could have purchased the Ivan Stewart model. Question, when you say very low VIN# are you referring to the trucks actual VIN# or the limited edition emblem plate # ? If you send me more particulars about your trucks I would like to help you research things about them. I have the historys on all my vehicles, I really like researching stuff about automobiles.

Robs Toynado- Thanks for starting this thread! Information on these pickups is rather hard to come by.

Suncomb1- I will try to grab pics of the vin, etc. on mine tomorrow in the daylight. Thanks for the resources, I have been trying to figure this out for a long time =)

Skamaniak- Mine has tilt, power steering, chrome grille, tach, A/C (well, not anymore, but the switch and A/C pump bracket are still there), and some other things that I am probably forgetting about at the moment. From what I am reading, A/C and Power Steering normally weren't available on the 1st gen 4x4's until 1983.

Speaking of, does anyone have a list of what options were available from the factory on the 1979 pickups? I am curious as to how many of these the Special Edition had, and how many features it had that didn't show up until later on. A google search has so far been fruitless...

Power steering was available on 81's as we had a truck with that. Its now on an 80 but it was there. And I must say this is very cool. I've had my 92 Xtra cab on the road for two years with the diesel in it but every time I come back here I want to start driving my 82 again.

I might be hijacking the thread here, but if you need any parts for restoring your truck, I have a 1980 Toyota motorhome that I am going to part out. The RV part is trashed, but The Toyota interior is in really good condition and would be perfect for restoring something like your limited edition truck. Being in the same neck of the woods would save on shipping, also.
