Thoughts on a cherry bomb?

I've seen one or two folks that have opted to go the route of a custom exhaust w/ a cherry bomb on there, and from personal experience, I've seen that go a couple of ways on anything less than 8 cyl- either surprisingly good sounding, or raspy, p'd off bumble bee in a can. I am thinking about doing this on my 3.0 4r, and would like input from anyone who has done it. Loud doesn't necessarily bother me, as long as its not raspy.

They are loud behind you, but surprisingly not bad in the cab. If your running a full body like a 4runner I would go with some sort of glass pack, tho I prefer Magnaflow. Chambered mufflers like Flowmaster cause to much resonance in the cab for me.

Last two mufflers were glasspacks, I liked them fresh but really loud as the glass burns out. I live in a neighborhood and leave early. I never thought it was bad but first thing wife said to me when I switched it out was she couldn't hear me turning into the neighborhood anymore. I like my set up now and didn't notice any performance drops just decibels. Download a decibel meter for your phone then go for a ride with someone. Anything over 80 decibels will cause hearing loss with prolonged exposure, like hours up to 100 decibel will do so with simple exposure. Never gave hearing loss much thought till the ringing doesn't stop ever. Will drive you bonkers. Not saying that the tinnitus was caused by the glasspacks as the list is quite long from industrial, loud music, rotary aircraft, gun fire, and explosions. But limiting any exposure may make a difference of course as do genetics. But the ringing never stops and sucks when it's quiet.

I've got a 24" thrush glasspack on my 91 3.0 runner. Had a nice sound to it. After I installed the Thorley long tube headers, it developed a raspy sound, but only over about 3,200 rpm when I'm getting on it. Now I just keep it under 3k rpm and it has a nice mean sound. But in the long run, I will be going back to a muffler to get rid of the nasty high rpm raspiness.

The older I get, the more quiet I like my cars.

Fast and capable, good.... Loud....not so much.

I put one on my 4 cylinder and I love it I did a full custom exhaust with a cherry bomb and it sounds fantastic. It all depends the execution, whether you half a** the job or not.
