Is the Lockright really that much worse? Because Im still gonna spend some time saving, maybe by then something will be out but I doubt it.

Matt16 are you in the lowermainland?
That reply doesn't really tell us anything of interest. I hope one comes out soon, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

I'm just off Lonsdale. Where are you? You're welcome to test drive the locker. If you're lucky, you may even get to test it in the snow on the road, to you can see what a locker is like when its supposed to be at its absolute more annoying.

So I know someone who's getting rid of their Aussie for $200 bucks and it's only been used a couple of times. He had it in the rear of his FTOY and complained about how it was unreliable on the trail. It'd pop like crazy when it was under load. He moved it to the front and it didn't pop like that any more. He was running a 22R + 4.10 gears with dual cases (one with marlin gears I believe) with 37"s.

Have anyone had any problems with it popping like crazy on the trail while it's in the rear? I want a rear locker that will work well on the road as well as the trail but from his review, I'm leaning more towards the higher quality Detroit. Makes me wonder if he installed it correctly or there was something wrong with his Aussie. We looked at it and there were zero cracks or anything..

Edit: I'm only running a 22RE with 4.38 gears and 35" tires.. nothing huge

I have no problems with mine in the rear or front. Sounds like it could have been an install problem. You need to make sure the spacing is correct. Mine have performed flawlessly in Moab!

I have 33's and 4:88 gears and my speedo is almost exact. I'm sure with 32's your speedo will read faster than you are going.

Sounds like a bad install. Never had that problem. Mine has never made any noise off road. What were his install measurements?

Here's another review specifically for the aussie in the front IFS.

IFS Aussie Locker Review

I have the elocker in the rear and so far have found the combo to work really well for the type of wheeling I normally do.

Great review there. I found the locker to be smoothest with super heavy dino oil (85W140), and really quite rough with synthetic. REdline Shockproof synthetic sounded like it should have been great (microscopic calcium particles suspended in heavy synthetic to provide some cushioning for the gear teeth, locker "gears" and bearings, BUT, it was the pits. The locker was really annoying with this stuff. I eventually settled on a cheap brand of dino oil (its SAE certified hypoid GL5 gear oil, just cheap).

I'd really like to hear how it handles in snow. I would have a front locker yesterday if i were comfortable with the idea of the diff locking and unlocking on a steering axle.

It won't fit your current diff. You could go buy a 4.10 diff from a 4cyl truck (its plug and play) and regear it as you'd have to anyways to run 35s. The 4 cyl diff won't have a problem with the torque of the V6 if properly set up.

That's what I did. Got an aussie for christmas and I wanted to keep it so bad I bought a 4cl diff. With that, this little guy came in the mail today.

Damn this locker rocks! We had a run this weekend and while running the Nitto At's and choosing the lines where I wasn't following 38" ruts, I was good to go.

anyoneknow where in canada i can get a aussie or lockright... dont want to pay duty or exchange as they are both not in my favour haha..

BUT ive recently had a change of heart..decide 2 things one i cant sell my truck and two i wont be able to afford a proper sas for atleast a year...

so im going to lock the front..and play.

love the welded rear and was just gonna weld a spare front... but id like to drive this beat to work in the winter to keep the hilux salt free!

so a lockright is better!

but brokerage ,duty and exchange arent in the budget but im willing to play a little more in canadian obviously!

Just to clarify, Matt is right, the 8" will not fit your rear diff, but the 7.5" locker will fit your front diff whether it is v6 or 4banger.

You only get hit with duty about half the time. i didn't pay it on my Aussie. Aussies have to be bought online at www.aussielocker.com. Stores don't sell them I don't think.

this is a great write up matt, i just bought scuba's aussie so i look forward to installing it and testing the driving characteristcs. i was nervous about handling on ice, but this really settled my mind. with anything on ice the trick is to drive with attention, caution and finesse. Missoula Mt probably won't get any more ice this year, so that'll give me spring and summer to get used to it. i will realy be looking forward to being able to take some loose trails in 2wd!
again, terrific job.

33x12.5 MTRs an no weight on the rear end may be a little tricky on ice, but that's more the fault of the tire and the truck than the locker. After a couple days/weeks, you;ll be able to adapt to road new conditions in seconds or minutes. Its a lot less tricky than figuring out a standard transmission.

i don't run my MTRs in the winter i switch to skinny 235/75 R15 on taco rims. MTRs are tricky on ice without a locker.... toughest part will be deciding where to put that cool new australia shaped sticker

Yeah, I've still got the sticker sitting on my bedroom shelf. I told my girlfriend at the time it was a brand of hand cuffs... so sorry, I can't tell you where to put the sticker.
