Ok fellas, I recently purchased an 86 Regular cab Hilux 22RE 5Spd, 4x4. Pretty excited about it!!! So with some research I decided to upgrade rather than just replace when it comes to ignition. I installed NGK platinum plugs (BPR5EGP 7082) and Accel 8mm superstock wires (4076) and the Accel supercoil (140001).

So a couple of trips to and from Orielly's and Autozone, I figured out that you can buy a set for a V8 (9 wires) that are "custom-fit" meaning you cut them to your likings. That being said, you can have enough for two 4cyl engines for the price of one. Other than that, installation is pretty basic.

For the Accel supercoil, I simply removed the old coil and its mounting bracket after removing the coil igniter from the top of it. I used one of the two original mounting bolt holes and drilled another to fit the bracket for the Accel. You will need a nut and bolt (separate, 10mm Head, apprx .5" length) to mount the bracket as one is not provided. Once mounted, you must ground the coil-igniter using the black wire (provided) or you will not get a spark and wonder what went wrong... like I did. Lastly I zip-tied the coil-igniter to the side of the Supercoil as there is no other feasible place for it without re-wiring.

Aftermath... Once cleaned up, I recognize a significant power increase and response. Frikin exstatic! My idle runs smother, engine rev is faster, smoother and very responsive.... and it almost could snatch your head back on acceleration. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/imag...lies/domo2.gif

I wish I could give a figure on MPG increase but my speedo cable is busted, so, until then all I have is the original 16.6 MPG calculation on a known distance trip. ...lifted 4" and runnin 33x12.5r15.

The outcome looks really nice. Is there anyway of telling if it will damage the engine over time by increasing the spark?

Wesley, the Accel supercool is within the regulations when it comes to resistance when checking by multi-meter and given the spark happens in a chamber where an explosion actually occurs I'd say it that no damage will occur. I'm fairly confident but nothing is 100%.

 

I am going to give it a try and see. Will be a couple of weeks before I can do anything.

I did just the coil and got a small miss when cruising and idle... not sure whats up there.

 

Well, I'd say to check the coil wiring, plug wires for good connection and maybe even the plugs. Good luck.

 

Accer seems to be hit and miss for me. Were garbage on m mustang, decent on yota.

 

About 25 years ago I install a Accel Master Blaster II HO coil that is ~45,000 volts. I use stock Toyota OEM plugs and wires. The new coil fit perfectly in place of the OEM coil which was still good. I had a Jacobs system on proir and it quit after 2 years. I now gap the Toyota OEM plugs at 0.40 for a larger spark kernel. Jacobs recommend 0.50 to 0.60 on their similar higher output coil. At 0.40 it's an easy gap and the 22RE starts 1st cranks and idles smoother than a 22RE should. Can't say more power, just a wider range. It will pull better above 4000 RPM and not flatten out like with OEM coil. The throttle response is quicker too. Still working all these years with no issues ever.
