Outer banks 19-20 Feb 05

Well, the trip started out good and overall it was a good trip if you don't count the 3 run ins with the law. We had some fun driving on the beach and we had a bonfire on sat night on the beach. After that all three of us got pulled over and got a bogus ticket for going 59 in a 45 especially since the 55mph sign was about 100 yards away when he clocked us and none of us were going anymore than 1mph over 50 (bigger tires compensated for). I'm a radar technician and I know those things go out of calibration often. Sunday we arived at Corova beach and were checking out some of the neigborhoods with sandy streets and some large water holes. We weren't tearing anything up, just taking out time going through the puddles and a sheriff stopped us and told us to leave now or we would be leaving in hand cuffs. It was a beautiful looking area but the first impression that I got was that if your not a local or make 100,000 a year, your not really that welcome by the lawmen. The question of the weekend was "You guys from around here?" despite 2 vehicles with Colorado tags and one with Texas tags. I don't know if it was a few bad coincidences but the whole first impression I got wasn't great. There were a few nice locals around but the law was a different story. I will post some pics later tonight.

This is my favorite pic from your trip. It is the same water hole that is in my avatar, notice the port o-pot in the back right. The pic with you guys out standing on the dune road, the big yellow house in the background on the right is the house we stayed in. Glad you guy's had some fun, and the cops were probably just giving you a hard time because of it being the off season and are trying to cut down on the house that get robbed during this time of year. Not saying you were doing anything wrong, but it's just easier for them to treat everyone like that instead of taking chances. During the "In season" you hardly see a cop anywhere around.

Can't figure out (even after reading the faq) how to post the pic I was talking about so here is a link to it.

My buddies land cruiser is awsome. I wish I had one. Around Jacksonville all we have is mud and it's not really great for that. We're planning a trip to Uwharrie for the first weekend it's open so that's more his style. We're both from colorado and used to the rocks. He just ordered a bunch more parts for it too. He's finally getting a winch, new gears, new front seats, and a bunch more stuff for it. It'll be decked out. We did have fun. Maybe I'll have to go up there when it's the "on season" and check it out. You can't have bonfires on the beach in the summer on Cape Hatteras can you? Oh well, still some good wheelin. Is property expensive up there? I imagine that when the roads get paved, the value of all the property up there will go up considerably.

That last photo (#28) of the deep puddle looks to be where my brither-in-law got his ram stuck last October. Stock height, stock tires water up to his headlights and his front bumper stuck on the incline enough to unload his front tires. He ran a half mile to the house while his wife sat in the truck with water swirling in around her legs. 2 tranny flushes and its seems to be back to normal.
