Cow mountain (ukiah) 4-30-2011

went out to cow mountain ohv saturday morning left around 5:30am got there at 8:30am , met craig (4bangercraig) at around 9:00. took off looking for trails right away ..
Didnt last long, at around 11:00 i broke my front diff or something, havent taken it apart but i dont have 4wd .. front drive shaft turns but the cvs dont , didnt hear any lound bang or anything just stopped working , also found my passenger hub dial cracked right down the middle ... happened at the end of the video.

also at the end of this video my 2nd battery pinched my power wire to the e fans , shorted out and didnt have fans for a while .. finally noticed my temp gauge .. and it was pegged at the top .. stopped, looked around and rewired the fans..

just barely made it out of the canyon we were in, in 2wd.

got back to the stagging area , made lunch and decided i didnt want to risk staying in some other canyon .. and left around 3:00 , craig decided to stay ..

so heres what pics and video i do have

yea it was cool ,there was quit a few people there also .

so i went to drain the oil in the front diff and it looked alright no metal at all ..
so i started on the hub and found the passenger axle broken , luckily i dont have to remove the diff i went ahead a pulled the axle out and saw the brass bushing all messed up so im gonna replace that .. so it looks like only the hub dial face deal ,bushing and axle .. and alls good .

hopefully craig will post some of the pics he got .. havent heard from him and am unsure if he even made it home .
.

looks like it may be a good area for winter wheeling. the elevation looks low, so no snow. Ill have to check the area out in the future.

What??? That's EXACTLY what happened to BOTH my cv shafts later in the day. Man. Guess that mountain just eats IFS...

I kept goin- found some deep mud, eventually stumbled upon the obstacle course, where I descended "The Wall" and then dropped into another obstacle, heart pounding from a 12 foot verticle drop. Only as soon as I dropped into the obstacle I stopped moving. Both rear tires digging holes, high-centered on the crosspiece. I got out with the back tires helplessly spinning in soft dirt and found that my CVs were spinning, but my tires were not. Found a tow out from a guy who'd come up the bypasses smoking a cigar behind the wheel of a 4X4 Chevy Silverado (after a Samurai failed to extract me with a winch...)
Took apart both hubs and found that my cvs had snapped and then turned to dust inside my hubs. Weird.
