Anybody have comments on Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ Tires?

I'm beginning to HATE my MT/R's. They balanced fine at first, but now i have two that are glass smooth (balanced to under 20# of force on the Hunter RF machine), one that will NOT go below 68# and one at a horrific, bone-jarring 84# (this one is so bad that the Hunter Machine spit out a "Cannot Balance" code and essentially gave up!) and likes to do this at about 45 MPH and at 70 MPH. Since Goodyear did away with the 305's, I can't get just two, and the one's that I find online are sets of 4.
I can get 5 305 Goodyear MT/Rs for $1000 shipped (I have a lead on 4 for $800 shipped and I found a single that I can get for the same price) and hope that they don't do this again and then sell the 4 305's and 1 285 that I have now and recoup about half that back, or I can go another route. I'm getting 5 so that I have a matching spare to be rotated with the set (about every 2000 miles so this doesn't happen again) and so the set should last about 20-25% longer since the total mileage is rotated among 5 tires instead of being only on 4.
I can't find any Toyo M/T's in a 305, so this is another alternative...

The 305 measures out to 33.1" tall by 12.0" wide. However, the 315 measures out to only 33.5" tall and 11.9" wide (NOT a true 315 or 35 for sure - it doesn't make much sense, but that's the official measurements on the MT website) and the 315 only weighs 4# more than the 305. Therefore, I'm thinking of going with (5) MT Baja MTZ's in 315/70R16 for about $1150 shipped.
What I want to find out is how do they wear? How do the balance? How do they do offroad in Mud and in Rocks? Any input - positive, negative, or passing along info that you come across on other boards is greatly welcomed and appreciated...
I can't search Pirate anymore since they remove the SEARCH function for non-contributing members (stupid idea in my opinion), so I can't get much info on them...

yeah... i have that same discussion going on at MUD.
from MUD:
yeah, i knew they were/are made by cooper. from what i've read about the STT is that they're an OK tire, but suck on the rocks due to excessively hard rubber. if these are the same, then i'll probably pass. also, the specs are different for the 315 STT and MTZ's including overall diameter. the MTZ is 33.5" diameter and the STT is 34.5" diameter - BOTH are 315/70-16's...

One of the local Jeep guys just switched to these from LTB's on his Cherokee. They are a great looking tire IMHO. He said they are quiet on the road, and quite capable off road, especially considering that he was at 15psi instead of the usual 11psi. They were good for 2MPG improvement in mileage over the bias-ply LTB's. Too soon to tell what the wear is like.

When it comes to "tires you rarely see" I have always been drawn to the Parnelli Jones Dirt Grip.

A guy at our Fall Gathering 2 years ago had them an everyone was really impressed. Very broad, shoulder lugs, seep siping, heavy sidewalls. Certainly worth a look.

I still like them. Got to spend some time in the snow and ice with them and was really impressed. Rocks have been good. A few treads have chunked, but nothing real bad. Mud has been o.k. too, got stuck once with them but nothing will move you forward with your axle hung up. Road manners good, still relatively quite. They're not a true 35" tire of course. Have about 10,000 miles on them and they still overall look great. Not a whole lot of wear at all. I'd buy them again, though I'd like a 36" size.

i talked w/ a rep at Mickey Thompson, and they said they came with 22/32" of tread, and are considered "worn out" at 3/32" remaining, giving a usable tread of 19/32". they said the "average" reported tread life is about 35k miles.
i typically change tires at or just below half of original tread remaining (on MT/R's), so i swap out between 8/32" and 10/32". at 8/32" of remaining tread, the MTZ's should yeild approx 25k miles. that's what i get on a set of MT/R's (8/32" of the original 19/32" of tread remaining), by the way, so the teadwear should be excellent for an offroad/MT.

comments, they seem a little pricey, i got all 5, Firestone MTs, mounted, balanced, sipped, road hazzard, alingment, plus a oil change for $800 total... out the door.

I really like those tires look real nice and not a bad price if you ask me. I paid $198 a peace for my 285/75/16 BFG MT's and I think I may like the look of those better. I wonder how well the tread life compares to the BFG Mt? Very nice tires and I can't wait to see how they look.

well, it was either these ($1050 for 5 shipped) or $229 each for 315/75 MTR's. personally, i'm a little tired of the MTR's, so i wanted something different.
here's some pics. dad-gum these things look HUGE by themselves, but they're only about 1.75" taller than my half-worn 305's.

i'm diggin' the tread as well.
also, in talking w/ the vendor and a mickey thompson rep, according to the wear reports that they're receiving, they should be 35k-40k of usable life - same as i get for the MT/R's.

I'm gonna get the cooper's next set of tires.
A friend has the MTZs on his dodge ram. He likes them, and I didn't notice that much road noise. but his exaust is absurdly loud.
Let us know how they work out.
